Here is my convo with Denso about this issue.
Hi, I purchased a Denso 234-4162 Oxygen sensor to replace the rear O2 sensor on my 2000 Toyota 4Runner SR5 Auto, Non-Cali emission (The Denso website suggests this one, which is the same as for the front O2 sensor on this vehicle). The wire harness on the sensor is not long enough to reach the vehicle harness side connector (I tried to find slack in the vehicle side harness to make it work, but the vehicle side harness was taut). I have looked online for a part number for a denso sensor with a longer harness, but cannot find one; I just found other people that have had this same problem. I ended up cutting off the wires and connector from my old sensor and soldering them onto the new sensor as an extension, which appears to have worked, but I know Denso will tell me that is not the ideal solution.
My research has shown that Denso makes the best O2 sensors (at least for my vehicle) and are the OEM supplier, so I would like to continue using Denso O2 sensors. Can you help explain the difference in length between the OEM rear O2 sensor and the 234-4162 (or suggest the correct sensor if this one is incorrect).
Thanks for your help.
Matt
Hi Matt,
Thank you for your interest in DENSO oxygen sensors. Can you please provide the original part number to cross reference to a DENSO sensor? Also, is your 4 Runner a 2wd or 4wd this will help us determine the right part for you.
Deanna
Hi Deanna,
What I can find for my O2 sensor part number (based on VIN and frame code) is 89465-39855. The cross reference on the denso website says this part number translates to 234-4154, but I have tried that part number as well (I tried that one first, and it didn't reach the vehicle harness either). My 4runner is 4wd. My frame code is VZN185L-GKPGKA.
Thanks for your help,
Matt
Hi Matt,
According to our specifications that is a direct cross to your OE part number. The lead Length Wire(in): is 12.91. What length do you think it should be? Or what length are you looking for?
Deanna
I am replacing this part on a friend's 96 LTD, so am in the same situation as before.
Here's my summary
Denso lookup:
2000 SR5 non-cali auto 3.4L - 234-4162
1996 LTD non-cali auto 3.4L - 234-4154, 234-4206, 234-4162
ToyoDIY for 2000 SR5 (and 1996) - 89465-39855 (this doesn't exist in the denso interchange)
Denso rep says 234-4154 for my 2000 (EDIT: I really need a 234-4153 as I actually have cali emissions, see later posts on my screw-up)
Here's some interesting info
Wire Length:
234-4154 - 12.91in
234-4162 - 10.63in
234-4206 - 11.77in
I ordered a 234-4154 and the wire was about 8in long. I chucked the box, so I can't check now, but I must have been shipped the wrong part number.
For S's & G's, here are some more wire lengths for flanged type sensors, should be compatible I think.
234-4161 - 15.35in
234-4153 - 17.72in
234-4155 - 24.41in
Sooooooooooooo... I measured the splice job I did on mine, and the length is just about perfect, and is right about at 13in, so I am tentatively convinced that 234-4154 is correct. So I guess the solution for me is to... order another 234-4154 for mine, and hope it is the right one?
I guess I will be ordering the 234-4154 for my friend's 4runner as well. I don't feel good about it though. I am tempted to just order the 161 so that I have extra length.
Any other opinions? If you have ordered any of the P/N's above, measure the tail length and verify that they are the correct length from above.
