Did I just screw up (head unit install)

I have a 2005 sr5 4runner, and I decided to add a new head unit to give it some new life. I looked at the head units that crutchfield said were compatible, and I picked the Kenwood DPX500BT. It seemed to have al of the features that I wanted.


I'm kind of a DIY person, so I wired up the harness and installed the unit myself. When removing the stock 4runner unit, I noticed that it had two more cables than I had anticipated plugged into it, and my new head unit did not have slots for these cables.

In the attached picture, there are two round ports and four that have white plastic female connectors. I plugged my car antenna into the appropriate port on my new head unit, and my wiring harness had slots for the two white ports on the left of the head unit.

The old toyota head unit had one additional round plug and one additional white plug. Foolishly, I decided to tape those off to the side, thinking that the harness came with everything that I needed. I turned on the radio, heard music from all of the speakers, and closed everything back up.


When I took the car out for a spin, however, the sound seemed to have less low end than I remember. Did I just disconnect my subwoofer, and did I buy a head unit that will not support it?

I probably should have taken the job to a professional.

Just called Crutchfield, and their tech support assured me that the other wires I taped off were a secondary antenna and some other things like remote control. I bought the car used, and it did not have steering wheel controls.

I also tweaked the sound settings and am getting something similar to what I used to get. Perhaps it was just the sound signature of the old head unit coupled with the fact that I used a tape adapter.

Case closed?

Check the speaker wires connections, make sure its not reversed, otherwise u are not getting the bass sound you need, the extra left over plugs would be the smaller antenna and the other is the steering remote plug with aux.
