I don't really care for the new Tacoma myself, but I still prefer they stop castrating or neutering the trucks.
 
Tacomas are nice but I really dont think it's anything like "apples to apples". The only thing you get "more" of is more bed space.

Honestly, if I wanted a truck, I'd just get the Tundra.

Agree... I am a bit confused about the people talking about getting more with a Tacoma. I find you get more driver and creature comforts, feature, and luxury with the 4Runner...

You can't even get power or memory seats in a top of the line trim Tacoma. Absurd. I honestly wanted to buy that truck, I wanted to like it a lot more that I did... but I had to pass.

I also find the overall driving experience to go to the 4Runner as the rear leaf setup doesn't drive as nice. That said, once you get into the aftermarket world things can change.

For the price they ask for the Tundra... I rather get a diesel truck from an American manufacture.

That said... I have a lingering feeling someone is going to tell me about the time a Tundra pulled a space shuttle 50 feet...

I have not read through this whole thread but to answer your question, yes, I did consider a Tacoma. I have had 4 Tacoma's in my lifetime. I also considered a Tundra and have been the previous owner of one of those also.

I chose the 4runner for numerous reasons one of which is I felt it was better built. Crazy to say that with the 3 vehicles coming from the same company but the materials and workmanship are superior on the 4runner. I went over all 3 on the lot back to back and over and over again...the 4rnr is better. The Taco felt cheap inside compared to the 4rnr.

Another reason I did not pick the Taco is because of the new motor and trans. It's basically a Camry motor in a truck and it's geared towards mileage instead of work. The trans gear hunts continuously in an attempt to be as efficient as possible. Toyota screwed this truck up. The only trans I would consider is the manual but you still get an engine geared towards the upper rpm range. The 4rnr drivetrain is proven and is a truck motor. This motor is used overseas in 70 series Landcruisers, it is very reliable and doesn't have all the tech trying to make it into something it's not.

The Tacoma also uses the same frame as it did ten years ago...they claim it's all new but it's basically the same truck with updated interior, front and rear body panels, and new motor and trans. The interior leg room and ergonomics are the same now for ten years. Then they charge $40k for it. Ridiculous. I think the GM is a better truck and the new ZR2 is the midsize truck to have IMO.

The Taco was the same price, maybe a little more, as my 4rnr Trail, so it took one drive in the 4runner and I knew which one I was getting. The only thing I am missing is a truck bed but a utility trailer is just as good. Toyota will still sell a lot of Tacomas due to it's reputation. But I am getting sick of them riding on that reputation and putting out hohum products. GM has caught and IMO passed Toyota with the ZR2. Hopefully Toyota will respond in kind...YMMV

Tacoma are very useful, but one downside for the tacoma is no manual t-case lever. Compare to the 4runner which you have the J-pattern t-case

Its worth keeping an eye on... I've been following this truck for a while, mostly as a skeptic but I have to admit its really growing on me. I got a chance to check out with the gas and diesel and personally I would take one over the Tacoma if I was in the market.

Very interesting truck... GM is absolutely thinking of the box on the ZR2. Its honestly what the TRD Pro Tacoma should have been.

Comes with front and rear locking differentials... and some pretty fancy shocks... basically position sensitive dampers vs the shaft speed sensitive most of us are used to seeing for bolt on OE performance applications.

Toyota doesn't seem to want to innovate much because of all the buyers who sell out their 4runner/tacoma/tundra models regardless of no innovation.
 
Well this is new. Do you have proof of this motor being a problem for GM?. The motor has been used in the Colorado/Canyon overseas version of those trucks for a few years now, so you would think the bugs are worked out.

An you cannot compare GM to to the previous daimler or Fiat...Fiat has had a steep learning curve since taking over Chrysler/Jeep. And Diamler had issues with quality control of Chryslers also. Many problems with quality control. I am not sticking up for GM. In fact I'm still ticked about the buyout, but would like to see some facts about GM putting a POS diesel in one of their trucks. Especially in a model that they have invested so much into.

To be perfectly up front here, my Dad retired from GM...I can get a pretty healthy discount..I drive a Toyota 4Runner and choose not to buy GM for reasons stated above. But I believe the new midsize GM trucks are better than the Tacomas... especially the ZR2...The TRD Pro Tacoma cannot compete IMO...YMMV

I have not driven a diesel colorado and don't plan to. Why? Because I know it will make me look at the 4runner differently. Baby turbo diesel?? Imagine the possibilities...

Tacoma's are for short people

I was looking at a Tacoma IN ADDITION TO our 4Runner.

If you are over 6 feet tall, there is NO headroom!

Too bad. But this has been the case for many model iterations.

I did some research and was on the Chevrolet lot an hr before I bought my T4R. The 2.8 is the same Italian motor used by a lot of manufacturers but it has some different tuning, injectors etc. I'm sure a quick search will confirm my statements. Also search Jeep Liberty CRD issues. I had to sign a statement that I wouldn't post my video of my CRD issues. Oh a quick search of Colorado diesel issues comes back with the same issues I was having. Limo mode NO POWER and no codes thrown. I'm a Cummins fanboy anyway lol.

I did do research. It seems GM now owns 50 percent of VM, the Italian motor company that makes the 2.8. It is the same block but it has been redone by GM engineers. It is a reliable motor. I did see one guy had a problem with it going into limp mode. This is weird but it turns out he let it idle for a loooong time and then it went into limp mode. Again, weird but the dealer told him it was normal. He had to limp to the dealer to get it fixed. So don't let it idle long which it turns out is not good for any motor...So I still standby my statement that GM would not put a POS motor in the Colorado line...too much to lose cuz Toyota owns the segment and GM has to garner the publics trust. When people realize the Colorado is a better truck, Toyota will finally be forced to step up and fix the Tacoma.

I also looked at a taco but my head literally hit the roof and you feel like your in a tuna can. I was really disappointed when I sat in one for the first time. I ended up getting a 16 4R. I am very happy with my first Toyota.
