Disaster Preparedness

Hey people,

All of the man caused and natural disasters that have been happening in the past decade and a half have really got me thinking about doing whatever I have to do to make sure I am prepared as possible for when, god forbid, one does happen in my neck of the woods. I mean, look at what happened in New York, New Orleans and on a bigger scale, Haiti and Japan.

This brings me to the Runner. I've always been fond of utility vehicles and the reasons I get them should not have to be explained on this forum. The main reason is to not be limited when it comes to getting where I need to be for the safety of my family. Let's be honest... you can't haul tons of supplies and get past tough obstacles with a Camry.

So, my question is; what are those custom bumpers that hold water containers called? I've searched the terms below and have yet to find which company makes them or if they need to be custom made.

• "Water can"
• "Water storage"
• "Water bumper"
• "Safari bumper"
• etc...

Do you have any recommendations or better yet, pictures that you can share?

You might try a more "expedition" oriented forum. At this point, anything you find for the 4Runner will most likely be a custom job, like the one built by Offroad Evolution for FourWheeler magazine: Project Backcountry

The primary role of a vehicle in disaster preparedness is bugging-out (getting to a safe area). As such, you need to think of a lot more than just water. There’s food, warmth, lighting, medical and the possibility of having to take your supplies and abandon your vehicle because you can’t get through. Also there’s the issue of where you’re going, how to rejoin your family, etc.

Look into keeping a 72hr kit in your vehicle at all times. As to the issue of water, the best choice is U.S.C.C. approved water pouches. I've done a write up on 72 kits and bugging out. If you want a copy, PM me and I'll forward a copy to you.

I have the swag action packer baja bin and I keep all my wheeling stuff and recovery gear in that I also have another bin that I keep survival gear for the just in case and for long trips in case something happens. I totally agree about the primary role of a vehicle for disaster preparedness is bugging out I keep the following in my bin. I plan on adding more stuff but yeah all the things that keep happening makes me want to be prepared

4 Mre's
2 ponchos
1 tube tent
1 gerber camp axe
1 bottle of water purification tablets
1 box of 9mm ammo
1 gallon of water
1 gerber lmf survival knife
1 package of fire starter
4 boxes of water proof matches
100 ft of 550 cord
1 mag light
1 collapsible water storage container
1 tube of sun screen
1 compass
1 first aid kit plus 2 packages of quick clot
1 small radio

I also keep fleece blankets in both my vehicles and gerber multi tools and sure fire flashlights

I agree with all you noted. The cans and the custom bumper came to mind because they're space savers; you can use your cargo space for the items listed above. I don't know too much about water pouches and the benefits so expect a PM from me. I'm air its something to consider.

Good stuff... that's a hell of a list. Most of these items are things people have laying around the house. Thanks for sharing that.

Yup... but that's after I get the things for my runner rounded up. The thing about a trailer is it won't always be hitched to your escape vehicle. Plus, you also will never know if you'd even be able to access one or the other but I'd rather gamble on my Runner first.

I think I can speak for all of us who seen your build on your trailer and can say we have all thought about it lol cause that is a sweet trailer
