Discussion: Feasibility of swapping the "Gameboy" dash display with an upgraded one?

I know this does not exist yet, but what if it did?

First, I am wondering how difficult a swap labor wise this would be just from a practical standpoint. That in itself could kill a project.

Second, I am wondering if in theory it could be totally replaced with an aftermarket upgraded version? One that takes all the input data from the ECU(s), and instead of displaying the data in its current and sadly pathetic 1989 Game boy style "graphics" and instead display it in a modern, color LCD that actually makes sense.

In case you are wondering, the current Toyo display likely costs less then $6.

While a huge project given the number of onboard ECUs it might be pulling data from plus software, I wonder if with so many 5th gen 4runners on the road if there would be an aftermarket?

Lets start by maybe telling us what year and trim package you have.

Also - no. There probably is no aftermarket if you're meaning to replace the display in the center of the gauge cluster. I think most people would just swap in the 2020 unit once they're available in the salvage market. EDIT: after learning a bit more, my guess is the odometer is stored in at lest two places, so once the new cluster performs its handshake with the ECU it'll adjust to the right odo reading. I don't think parts are available yet to buy the 2020 cluster, but soon they will be.
