That would actually be pretty cool if your state allows it. I know in Va, the air bag light being on would fail the yearly safety inspection. You would have to wire up some sort of resistor to the clock spring. Plus you would lose some of the features I've grown to appreciate. Such as, the radio controls and cruise control.

If your airbag went off in a fender bender then you weren't wearing your seatbelt! So shame on you!
But I've toyed with the idea of a different steering wheel.. honestly though, I really haven't had the urge to get a different one...

You could also save a few extra dollars and toss your kid in a milk crate instead of one of those car seat things. Seriously, what were those fools thinking, safety, who needs it!

I'm going to go ahead and just assume that you're not quite understanding what I'm asking or for what reason.
For that alone I'll send a little note northward asking that you wake up in a little nicer mood.
I've been in a minor fender bender in my '03. None of the airbags went off. If I ever am in an accident and the airbags go off, I will have them replaced.
First, my 4runner won't pass inspection with an airbag warning light. Second, I want every advantage I can get if I'm ever in a bad wreck. I always wear my seatbelts. I paid extra for side-curtain airbags (they were optional in '03).

Personally i would never take out the steering wheel airbag unless it's for a racecar. You need all the protection you can get when you share the road with nutcases.

I have a friend who used to ride around in his CJ7 with no doors or seatbelts.
Hydroplaned during a thunderstorm and was thrown clear from the vehicle, had nasty road rash but the CJ wadded up around a steel high tension pole.
Would have died if he was belted in.

I had a friend who drove around his S10 blazer up north with no seatbelts on. the 2 guys without belts got ejected, 1 was fine, other was crushed by the vehicle rolling ontop of him. The kid in the back with his seatbelt on had a few scratches.
My late father was a doctor. In the early '70s, he started working a second job -- ER on Saturdays. He did an informal survey of all car accident patients that he treated. He asked them if they were wearing their seatbelts and how their headrest was adjusted.
He stopped the survey after 6 months because it was pointless -- as soon as he started treating a patient he new immediately whether they were wearing their seatbelts and if they had their headrest properly adjusted.
After that, his car didn't move until everyone had their seatbelts on. The same is true for mine. If any of my passengers don't want to wear their seatbelts, they are free to walk.

Since we're on the subject of seatbelts, if anything; wear them to save you some money.
I wasn't joking about the fender bender thing, modern cars will usually pop pretensioners in a low impact collision; not wearing a seatbelt? Its okay! The car will blow the airbags, even if it only was a 15mph fender bender! As far as I know some insurance companies will really nail you if they find out you weren't wearing a belt.

Putting the safety thing aside for a minute.
Consider current licencing, safety check and insurance plus future potential ability for resale before picking up an auction rebuilder for "cheap". Check the regs where you live. It may cost you more than you figured if you don't rebuild it back to stock, without an airbag, and then can't get tags on it. If you're putting money into it and got it cheap enough then the airbag is nothing in the big picture.
ps. Might be a good opportunity to upgrade to an aftermarket bumper.
