Dobinsons 5th Gen T4R Suspension options - from Exit Offroad

Bilsteing is having supplier issues is the story I got directly from them. I ordered mine in October and just cancled the order a couple of days ago because they have pushed the out to mid May now....

My 6112’s keep getting pushed out further and further. Likely going to go with 5100’s and Dobinson springs as soon as I get back from vacation. Seems to have excellent reviews.

Are the Dobinson shocks a bit beefier than the 5100’s? 51mm vs 46mm?

Because that is what the fourums are for and hopefully the recomendation will help others who have lift questions are looking a Dobinsons products.

I agree with you, but if you aren't getting the attention you want, call them on the phone instead of feeling like he is ignoring you. My comment wasn't an attack on you; it was a possible solution to your problem.

+1. Mike has always been super responsive via PM, Email, or phone. Also, the first post of this thread already has tons of info that you need (lift height amount, load weight recommendations, spring wire thickness).

Choose the appropriate 2" lifted coil to suit your weight, then add GS59-574 struts, which add 1" of lift, for 3" of total front lift.

Then choose which coil you want in the rear. A lot are doing 3" in the front and 2" in the rear, so that they only need rear coils and shocks, nothing else. Going with 3" in the rear requires longer brake line and bump stop extensions to do it properly.

Yes, UCA's are required for 3" of front lift.

So for a 3"/2" lift I need:

Front
Spring: C59-448
Shock: GS59-574

Rear
Spring: C59-325
Shock: GS59-701

This levels the 4runner correct? Can you PM me a price?

That combo would be at about 3.5" on the front, as the 448 coils by themselves are 3" coils (meant to be used on like Bilstein 5100's at the lowest clip height), then our GS59-574 struts preload them with the taller coil seat.

C59-300 with GS59-574 will be 3" of lift with no weight
C59-325 with GS59-701 will be 2" in the rear with no weight. I suggest GS59-705 rear shocks if you are empty always as they have slightly softer valving.

That's all $790. Add $140 if you want them preassembled with new mounts. Plus shipping.

And yes, UCA's will be needed also. Ours are $550, due end of April.

Ok thanks! I'll weight my options, I may go this route.

Mike helped me decide what setup to run after my Wheelers Off Road coils weren't up to the task of additional weight.

I decided to keep my 5100's for now.

Front: C59-302 with .5" top spacer
Rear: C59-325

Tires are Nitto RG 285/70r17

Wheels are SCS F5 17x9-38

The winch will be installed next weekend.

Ass up

Love all the options and setups. Maybe it’s just me but all of the setup pics I’ve seen look ass high. I’m all for a little rake but it seems excessive. What would be the best setup for level at 2.5”and level at 3” I’m still debating on UCAs and 3” or 2.5” and running it.

My choice (above) in springs was 2.5 front, 1.5 rear. The UCA's were most likely not a 'required' thing as a result of my choice but the front-end handling on the highway is much better.

Looks good but for my liking looks ass high. Knowing that I would do 3 up front

It all depends what your intended usage is.. I've had both level and "ass high" springs bottom out on me on the trail, but I carry the kitchen sink with me when I camp sometimes.

As far as advice, if the rake is that much of a concern I'd get whatever desired height rear you want and pair it with adjustable front coilovers, not clip adjustable but full on, threaded-body coilovers. That way you can pick up the associated spanner wrench and tweak front end ride height to your liking. Most of the 2.5 body coilovers available have full adjustability between 2-3" inches. Dobinsons MRR are adjustable, as are many others. Hope that helps, I think it's a good option if it's within budget.

Currently I have OME 889 springs and nitrochargers in the rear.. when we go camping, I have maybe 300 lbs on the roof and in the cargo area. Wit the 889s in the rear and 884s in front, I sit pretty level loaded up. But, unloaded, it is pretty firm in the rear.

Any (rear) springs you carry possibly softer than the 889s, but can take the weight when I go camping?

The trucks come from the factory with the rear being about 2" taller than the front, so that it can carry weight. So you need to lift the front 2" more than the rear to make it totally level, but it's really not advised. If you load up the rear after that, you'll have reverse rake which leads to a poor driving experience.

And without knowing all the weight you add, I can't suggest parts. Check post #1 again. 3" front lift, you need UCA's.

So when unloaded, you have no constant weight on the truck? Roof rack, drawers, rear bumper, etc?

2889 coils are 400mm free height and 260LB/IN rate.

You could do our 325's to run a reduced rate than what you currently have, but it all depends on your daily loaded weight, and then how often you load up. If your truck does sit level fully loaded, then it would be ass-down if you go with a softer coil and then add the same weight.

Dobinsons Mike, I finally got the C59-725 springs installed on the rear with the 5160s. Fronts are 6112s at 7/7. The ride is great - these springs really match the dampening of the 5160s nicely. I've got almost everything in the car without any noticeable sagging from weight minus the RTT. There is still a healthy rake to absorb that when it gets added. Very happy - thanks for all your help and advice during my back and forth between 727s and 725s!

I'd say it depends on how much extra gear you also carry when you add the box and tent into the mix. Plus people. You don't want to bottom out. The C59-727 would be the right coil with the accessory weight, and to support extra added weight, like camping and cooking gear, etc. But when you take that stuff out, you'll be taller. It will still ride alright, but you're going to change by probably 1/2", if not more, in ride height. That's basically why the listing starts at 200LBS and goes to 400LBS of extra weight. Take out your stuff and you'll be maybe just at the 200LB mark, but add the tent and box, you'll be right between the 200-400.

Oh, and you'll maintain ground clearance, which is very important when loaded down.

But if you truly only go fully loaded camping 2x a year, maybe run the 725 coils so that your 99% road driving isn't affected. Just something to keep in mind.

271LBS is still a lighter spring rate than a lot are running with rear OME coils, so the ride will still be good when unloaded with the heavier 727 coils, but you'll just have more rear height when empty.
