Dobinsons 5th Gen T4R Suspension options - from Exit Offroad

I purchased the GS59-574 and used the stock coils on my 2wd SR5 to gain a little over an inch in the front. No complaints whatsoever. They ride great.

Thanks buddy...good to hear! I am not really looking to change out my coils I just want to raise the front end more. The 5th gen 4Runner has too much rack. I had a second gen Tacoma and I put a 1/4 spacer (1/2 lift) with Firestone airbags (1/2 lift) with 265/70r17 and the truck looked great but the 1/2 spacer did nothing for the 4Runner. And another think I noticed was how much deeper the 4Runner rides in its suspension vs the tacoma. Brand new my old Tacoma the c/v's rode at a slight downward angle whereas the 4Runner is flat or an extremely small upward angle (no added weight to either truck). I am definitely leaning more towards the shocks than getting the new coils and shocks. Now I just need to save up the money to upgrade...

@Dobinsons_Mike

I had these coils installed in my 2017 4Runner with KDSS. Had them on for about 6,000-miles and love them. I have the C59-300 in the front and C59-723 in the rear. I have Bilstein 5100's front and rear with the lowest clip setting on the fronts.

I feel that they have settled a bit (especially in the front) and I have it in the shop now for some adjustments.

Here are the measurements I took this morning:

Driver Passenger Lean
Front 36.75 37.25 -0.5
Rear 39.25 39.75 -0.5
Rake 2.5 2.5

A couple questions:

1) Do you think that there would still be some rake even if I raised the front to the second notch?

2) Any way to adjust the 1/2" lean due to the KDSS? I can't really tell, only due to measuring. Not a huge deal.

THANKS!!!!

Anyone with 5100's ever move the spring perch from the lowest setting to the .85" setting? Currently have 300's up front on the stock perch, but wanting to get a little more lift up front. I would assume this would be similar to the height with the Dobinson long travel front struts?

I think 1/2" lean is perfectly normal. Follow this link to learn how to push out the lean: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xtURdW66WM4

Both of you are looking at doing the same thing. It would be good if anyone could chime in if they have done that.

Just remember, Bilstein's lift measurements are approximate and were based on stock coils, which are lighter rate than ours, so it's possible that it may lift more than what they say.

Mike I would rather not swap out control arms, and after reading up on lifting the 4 runner it looks like 2 inches don't require them.

I have the KDSS option and was looking at the C59-448 "comfort" springs, would you ever offer the softer 507lbs weight spring for a 2 inch lift for the KDSS equipped rigs like mine? The guy I spoke to that added the factory PRO springs said his ride got stiffer and I am not looking to go any stiffer, if anything softer.

Thanks

You can get away with 2.5" and stock UCA's.

No, we have no plans to make any other height of the 448 springs.

You can't put Pro springs on stock struts, so what did that guy do? He put on a full Pro suspension I'm guessing, with different struts and shocks.

Mike, need a recommendation for 2018 TRD OR when replacing stock shocks and struts with 5100's front and rear. Really just want the vehicle to be leveled out, but an additional inch or so in the rear would be fine. Looking for spring recommendations, front and rear, that will offer me some future growth in weight capacity (smallish front winch bumper, sliders, roof tent, and possible rear tire carrier), but still be livable while the 4Runner is fairly stock (bumpers front and rear by be a year out). Again, really looking for stock or near stock lift in the rear, and about 2.5" in the front, which I can get mainly from the 5100.

Thanks,
Pete

Hi Pete,

Honestly, I don't see any need for you to change the coils right now if you just want to add 2.5" to the front. You'd be better of waiting until you add weight, then choose the correct coils to suit that weight. Or you can add the C59-302 coils now and keep those struts at the lowest clip height.

You can add the C59-599 rear coils now for 1" of lift, but the other accessories you're talking about adding could take up most of that lift at that time.

Hello Mike, any updates on the Pro coils 2in coils ?

Thanks :becky:

He added the Pro shocks in addition to the springs, I asked him if rode stiffer and he said yes. Like tons of spring compaines they tend to go stiffer and your set is th eonly ones I have seen lighter than stock. I just don't want to go crazy with UCAs. I will probably leave it stock, but figured I would ask if there was a solution.

I've been blasted with a lot of questions recently about our suspension offerings for the 5th Gen 4Runners, so I figured it's time to make a specific post about all that we offer. We can lift anywhere from 1.0" to 3.0" with coils and struts/shocks, and we can put together a specific package for whatever you want/need, including the added weight you've added to your vehicle.

Can you get the springs in a different color other than the periwinkle blue? I keep hearing good things about this suspension from the GX470 guys. Even a close friend of mine just put this on his Sequoia.

I just got mine in red. They also offer black. If you want either of those colors you need to contact them direct and they will send you an invoice.

Yes we do. There's a breakdown in the first post of this thread that shows each part number and color options. Not every coil we offer though is in multiple colors.

Thanks Mike. I've attached the measurements before and after moving to the 0.85" perch.

5100's at 0" Perch
Pre 8/1/2018 Install

Driver Passenger Lean
Front 36.75 37.25 -0.50
Rear 39.25 39.75 -0.50
Rake 2.50 2.50

5100's at 0.85" Perch
Post 8/1/2018 Install (+.85")

Driver Passenger Lean
Front 37.25 38.25 -1.00
Rear 38.75 39.75 -1.00
Rake 1.50 1.50

I have the the C59-300's upfront too, and recently moved up to the 0.85" setting.

The Good: Looks much better, and there's no rubbing in the front. Rake is now 1.5" (rear to front)

The Bad: The driver's front raised 0.5" and the passenger front raised 1.0"; therefore the lean is now at 1.0". Also, the couldn't get the alignment within spec, so it's pulling a bit.

So.....I just purchased the adjustable SPC upper control arms, so hopefully this can bring it within spec, and help with the lean.

I'm considering having them move the lift up to the 1.75" perch. I think it would still have some rake to it, I'm just worried about the alignment - but with the new SPC arms, I think I should be ok. Any thoughts?? :ohwell:

In my haste/excitement/stupidity, I forgot to measure the fender gap before and after. Honestly with the amount of weight that's in it now and the spring preload, I am thinking it's closer to 2.5"-3". It will probably settle some too I think. Ride feels pretty good (was expecting a harsher ride).

I can post my alignment sheet later. Shop said they had a little trouble getting one number in spec but I can't recall what it was. Honestly the alignment specs baffle me and I dont really know much about them.

Sorry for the delay, I was out of town for the past 5-6 days for a business trip.

You're in uncharted waters basically by adding preload to our coils with those 5100's, and I think that's why no one else has chimed in with help or opinions. Everyone else is running the appropriate height coil at the lowest clip height. It sounds to me like you're just getting too tall on the front, and you have KDSS too, right? You'll have to work with the KDSS system to get the lean out of it. Perhaps the installers didn't open the valves before working on it, that could easily produce a lean, especially at a taller height.

What are your measurements from the center of the hub to the fenders, front and rear?
