Dobinsons 5th Gen T4R Suspension options - from Exit Offroad

Shout out to Mike...Great customer service from the first time I reached out...

I ordered front 238 coils for a 1" lift in front, but maybe ended up 300s as I got a full 2" on both sides in front. 599s out back gave 1"

Be best to let it all settle and remeasure after 500 miles. The 238 coils are physically shorter and I noticed it when assembling those. The shorter the coil, the easier it is to mount on a strut.

It's not a 2WD, is it?

no pics of the new suspension setup yet, but thought i'd share just how tall the C59-677V rear springs are compared to the Toytec Superflex 2" rear springs. ride has been very comfortable paired with king shocks

Here's mine with the 300/505 combo. I had originally posted the install back in April (post #756), but now it's had some time to settle.

I swapped my C59-325 rear springs for 505s a week ago. I'd say it's perfect now, should've done it from the start. Luckily its not the most expensive mistake. Looks better and noticeably easier to get shit into the back. Ride is the same of course, same spring rate and shocks. Front is also the same (300s with 574 struts).

Thanks for the reply, I hope development is still going on :)

What was the issue with the first test articles ?

Mike Tomczyk from Dobinsons USA sent me this related reply today, after I inquired about progress on the 2" kit for TRD Pro suspension:

"It looks like we're backing off from the front coils and just sticking with the 1" front coil. There seemed to be a lot of interest early on in a 1" coil to add some height, but the sales haven't proven to be there, so with the extra R&D costs for taller and stronger coils (aka Air Freighting back and forth each sample set), we don't want to be working hard at it and not sell any/many at the end of the day. We're recommending people replace their pro struts all together and go with a new strut and coil combo, as we have a huge amount of options already for those and can tune it perfectly."

Wow, what a big disappointment :noidea:

So because the 1in ain't selling as well, they are cancelling the 2in ?

Interesting as it seems like the 3in (so a +2in) is the one that I've been hearing about more in this forums and facebook.

If this statement is true, it's also a bad point that we got the information from a PM, and not an announcement on their own thread so people can stop waiting for those products that apparently are not coming anymore.

More and more 5th gens are on the road, more and more TRD Pros are on the road, and more and more people will be looking into modifying and wheeling their 5th Gen TRD Pros... 2in will be more popular than the 1in for sure !

On a personal level I'm really bummed because I've been waiting on these items for a while, after excellent recommendations on their products...
Dobinsons Mike , should we keep waiting on the 2in for the Pros?

Thank you 57HotrodVW for sharing this sad info

Yeah, I was bummed too.

I got a follow up reply from Mike this AM. He's aware of/subscribed to the lengthy TRD Pro lift questions thread. Maybe he'll chime in here...

That was an email I sent that new member last night.

Remember, this is and was always a product that was "in design and testing". I never said "this will be coming for sure".

Yes, you shouldn't hold your breath. We have samples in the field too, but we are waiting to see how the Bilstein's last with a strong spring rate installed and with more lift. It's only been a few months since they were put on. We don't then want to get blamed for the struts blowing out. It's not something we can just jump on right away, which is why we have been quiet about it while we test. Just because we can make a taller and stronger coil for these struts doesn't mean we should, so we have to test the product, and also watch the market and see the demand. The 1" lifted coil is a very minor upgrade, but the 2" doesn't leave a lot of down travel in the struts, and historically, struts left riding with minimal down travel end up topping out repeatedly until the top seal blows.

And while there are a lot of Pro 4Runners out there currently, Toyota is changing to Fox suspension shortly.

Other guys have also found off-the-shelf King coil options to work on their struts, and we have been watching that conversation too.

At the end of the day, we are more confident in our struts with our heavier coils to perform exactly as they should, lift correctly, and not fail prematurely.

Thanks for the insight Dobinsons Mike !

You are absolutely right about the "in design and testing" vs the "this will be coming for sure", it was just me wanting very hard an affordable solution.

I will be looking into your complete kits soon !

Thanks again

Still waiting on my 5100s and new top hats but I got a pkg today!

Thanks Mike!

I'll post up my results after we get some cooler weather so I can install.

I truly don’t know why people keep buying Bilsteins. These are much better.

Most manufacturers have left bilstein, and now Toyota will be.

In what way? AFAIK a lot car mfg are still using Bilsteins for their trucks. Chevy, Dodge, Nissan, not sure what Ford uses for the FX4 and if you didn't notice they use Bilsteins for the TRD-OR Tundra and Tacoma.

I paid $270 bucks shipped for 4 brand new 5100's with the Ebay 20% off deal. It was tough to beat. I do plan on going Dobinson LT shocks down the road, but likely not for a while. In the meantime the ride with the 5100's and my springs has been fantastic.

Oh, and if you TRULY WANT to buy my new suspension, I'll take a Toytec setup. Of course I'll need you to pay for installation too.
