Dobinsons 5th Gen T4R Suspension options - from Exit Offroad

I'm digging the purple collars TBH. I have the teal coils and think it would've been a fun retro color scheme going!

Looks great!

I’m considering going to these sometime next year and would totally dig the purple collar to go with the teal springs.

Thanks. Personally, I was disappointed when I opened the box and saw purple instead of black but figured you can’t really see them anyway.

Crikeymike Maybe make the purple an option?!
If anyone got the purple collars, that means those were air freighted over from Australia because the regular black ones must have been sold out. At a cost of about $5 per LB, your 20LBS of IMS are now worth an additional $100!!!

All IMS and MRA made for the USA have black collars, but with the way this year has been, with things running out of stock and massive shipping delays, some parts have needed to be air freighted.

So to answer it, no, the purple is not an option. The adjusters are spun on at the factory to make sure all the threads are in great shape prior to shipping.

Hey Mike,

When adjusting the IMS coilovers: reducing the height seems easy, get the tires off the ground and remove them, turn the first ring to back it off, the the second.

What about for raising the front end? Same deal or do they really need to come off?

I’ve only got maybe .5” of rake right now and I’m not super sure why, maybe the added wheel weight of the 285 I’m not sure. I got the 2” rear coils with no load, maybe I need the 80-100lb load springs in the rear? I’ve got the 701 twin tube and 325 coils currently.

I could adjust the front down a little for now then when I add a winch in the future go back up to account for weight. Just curious how easy it is to lift the front end back up without removing the coilovers.

Here's the full explanation.

If they're not brand new, they need to come off to adjust up. You'll see why in the video. At 6:50 is where I talk about it

Yeah, if you have only 1/2" of rake, and everything has settled in already, then you could reduce the front. What front coils are you running and what height is the front IMS coil seat height set to? Without the front weight on there to squat it down, seems like you will need to lower it.

The fronts are the 314’s I’m actually not sure of the height, I had you guys set them there for 3” with only a steel skid on the front. No biggie, I could be a few years away from bumper and winch honestly so maybe going down 1/4” (1/2” total) makes sense

The closest to “level” I can get the truck, I’m measuring 23-3/4” front height and 24” rear height. I failed to measure stock height before installing....

Does the front seem high based on that? I measured the perch height while it was on the truck at 8-1/4” on the drivers side. Which is what like 210mm? Thoughts?

I installed 300's on 700's in the front and 599's on 705's in the rear. I'm currently at 2.5" gained in the rear and 3" in the front. I haven't driven it yet, so the suspension hasn't been cycled at all. Does that sound right? Will it settle that much?

Yes, it's about 3-3/4" lift up front right now, and it will be like that until the additional front weight is added.

Spring seat should be at 213mm, which seems like you're right at it.

Rear is at 2" over stock right now.

I can take my 4runner, lift it off the ground, even though I haven't touched the suspension since January, and when I put it back on the ground (without driving it), it will be taller. The tires grab the ground and hold the vehicle up, because it's IFS. On the rear, if you didn't loosen and retighten all the trailing arm bolts, the bushings are now preloaded too since they're at a new riding angle.

Measuring a lift as soon as it's installed without driving it isn't a good use of time. It needs to be driven, and nothing would have had a chance to break in yet.

Alright so that makes sense then, I need to lower the perch about 3/8” or as close to it as I can ha.

I’m thinking I can just loosen the lower collar, move it 3/8” down then carefully lower the upper collar to make contact which will lower the spring and perch but without measuring the perch as it’s a little further from the shock body if that makes sense? Ha

Perfect, thanks Mike!

For lowering that makes sense. Just make sure all the threads are clean and use a little bit of oil/lubricant (Toytec specs this for adjustment on the vehicle of their assemblies).

Also, that 3/8" of lowering will end up dropping the front end 3/4".

Yup, I’m hoping to drop it 3/4” to get that 1” of rake back. I’m somehow very high right now at 3-3/4”.

Thinking a little w/d after I clean it to help it move easier.

A few bits and pieces got upgraded on this 4Runner recently.

Check out the difference in the last photo, Dobinsons rear upper trailing arms vs. stock.

I'm going through all of the bolts that I touched for the install and verifying torque. What is the torque spec for the castle nut on the Dobinsons UCA?

Edit: I'll assume it's the same as the stock one (82 ft/lb)

Is anyone using Airbags (spring helpers) with the 329 Rear Springs?

99% of the time, I'm golden with the 329s: Full Dual Swing Rear Bumper, LP66D SnoMaster Fridge, and whatever else I cram in the cargo area.

...oh, and my fam... :D

Well, now that I have a trailer with water tanks I am seeing some sag. I ran airbags with my old springs, but they are way to short to use in the 329s. I'd like to grab some taller bags. So, looking for anyone with experience.

Cheers!
