Dobinsons 5th Gen T4R Suspension options - from Exit Offroad

Just curious, did you take measurements before lifting? I think toyota allows for a max of 1/2in lean from factory. Lifting could add to that

Yes: DR: 21.5" PR: 22". I'm not exactly sure how much gas was in the tank when I took that, but if I had to guess, probably 3/4 full. Definitely more than the 1/4 tank it has now.

Have many miles on the setup? My rear end took a good 500 miles of weight and bashing to get it to fully settle into place. I had some good KDSS lean before - it was gone post settling.

The reason for looking at the perch is sometimes the coil tail can be placed on that upper "shelf" which would create a very noticeable offset on your lift.

I'm at ~500mi since the lift

You're better off doing like you said, 314's with 574's, that way if you add more weight, you can raise the coil seat to regain lost lift.

Thanks for the feedback. I have a few more questions.
With the lower front axle load right now, am I right that I need to add a note on my order to set front struts coil seat at 213mm if I add an assembly option? Should it be done slightly different for driver vs passenger side if I have KDSS?
Do I have to remove strut from the truck and use spring compressor to make an adjustments to the coil seat position or can I do it in place?

If it's going to be a long while before you add the front weight, then yes, you'd be better off setting it up to the height you want with no weight, then later adjusting the height.

They need to come off to do it properly, using a coil compressor. Here's video that I break it down: Dobinsons IMS Strut unboxing - How to set coil seat height - YouTube

Usually with KDSS we set the front even height on both sides and use a 15mm spacer on the rear passenger side and it ends up balanced. That's how my 4runner is.

No, that gap is ok, it wouldn't make the kind of difference that you're getting. Great photos by the way, exactly what we needed to see.

Disconnected the swaybar, moved forward+backward, jumped on the sliders, then reconnected the swaybar and the passenger side went down around 1/8". Driver stayed the same.

Went for a quick drive today and measured the rears when I got home. It's back to 23 3/4" and 23". Any other ideas?

The only other thing is make sure if you're using a spacer that it's on the correct side. Then if this doesn't settle out, you'll need to source a thicker spacer for the low side.

I have 2021TRD offroad. Will the stock shocks work with the Dobinsons springs?

:shrug::peace:

Technically yes, but you should only do a short height lift of 2" or less with those. They're not as strong as the Dobinsons shock upgrade and would probably fail prematurely if lifted any more than that.

It's definitely on the correct side, so I'll fill the tank up and figure out if a 20mm or 25mm spacer would do best. Thanks for your help!

Thanks for posting this! I just bought the 300 and 599 springs but had no idea how they would look. I wanted a small lift, but with 5100s and 275/70/17 tires instead.

Finally posting having installed last month. Love how it drives compared to my previous setup (6112/5160). Should have gone this route out the gate.

- SPC UCA

Didn't take any pre/post measurements unfortunately.

Thanks Mike for talking me through the options and providing good instructions on how to do this myself. The KDSS steps you provided actually helped get rid of lean that I had my previous 6112/5160 setup.

Mike is this in stock. Front Springs: C59-302 - 2.5" lift with stock front end load, 2" w/150LBS added
Front Shocks: IMS59-50700 Internal Monotube IFP Shock suits 0-2.5" lift
Rear Springs: C59-325 - Stock rear end, 2" lift
Rear Shocks: IMS59-50705 Internal Monotube IFP Shock suits suits 0-3" lift
Optional Install Parts: Nothing else, thanks
Front Optional Assembly: Nothing else, thanks
Rear Optional Parts: Nothing else, thanks

No

Those front coils are due at the end of the month in red or black only
No ETA on those rear coils
Front IMS due by the end of the month
Rear IMS will also be able to ship when the front coils arrive

I am trying to plan out some upgrades and getting confused when it comes to the suspension. I am looking to eventually get a hybrid bumper with a winch, but not sure when (~120-130 lbs). Not sure if I can justify a rear bumper so that may be stock for the most part. Even knowing what I want, I am confused on what coils and struts to look into. If I upgraded the suspension before the bumper/winch, would that negatively affect the ride? I am also not looking to lift a whole lot either since I have new tires and they are stock size atm, maybe an inch? Any insight would be much appreciated. Thanks!

The shocks side is relatively easy if you're looking at dobinsons. You have the 700 or 574 fronts. 574 has more travel.

Springs wise, there are a few options and it all depends on what static ride height you are looking to get. Now lets say you get a C59-300 which gives you about 1.8inches of lift with a stock front set up. If you eventually add a bumper, the static ride height will most likely drop down. How much? depends on the spring rate and the calculations.

If you want to lift your car a certain height and you have a bumper, you need to get a spring that has a spring rate that allows you to lift all that added weight. IF you start with that sort of spring and have no bumper, the higher spring rate can cause a rougher ride. That being said, you can always swap springs out so you can start with a lower spring rate for no bumer and add a higher spring rate spring for when you add a bumper.

Great thank you for replying. I had no idea about the build a kit site, (maybe its new?). Taking a look at that I think I figured out what may work for me, keeping the future upgrades in mind.

If I am understanding things correctly, this is what I was thinking:

Front Coils: C59-302
Front Struts: GS59-700
Rear Coils: C59-505
Rear Shocks: GS59-705

That's a good combo - relatively the same to what this white 4Runner has (he the same coils but has MRA shocks). The black 4Runner has similar proposed shocks (IMS, standard length + comfort rear) and front coils but with 325 eq. coils in the rear(discontinued kdss lean version).

The front lift on both these trucks measures out a hair over 22" center hub to fender. The rear on the black truck is about 0.65" higher than the white truck. Hope this helps!

Tire size, black 4Runner = 255/80R17 (33.1"x10")
Tire size, white 4Runner = 265/70R17 (stock)

Thanks for the picture, that definitely helps, as well as some confirmation that my choices may work. I currently have stock size as well so it is nice to see too. These upgrades are a slippery slope haha.

That's the most common combination of parts. 2.5" up front and 1.5" in the rear. Gives you room to add bumper and winch weight up front and still keep some good lift height, and also removed a good bit of rake to help level out the vehicle.

I also have a gallery of photos here with part numbers listed: Gallery - Toyota 5th Gen 4Runner (2010-2020) | Exit Offroad
