Dobinsons 5th Gen T4R Suspension options - from Exit Offroad

Crikeymike what is the shelf life of the Dobinson's shocks? I bought a lift for my 5th gen limited, but I may decide to just do a spacer until the XREAS wears out rather than scrap it when it only has 15K miles.

I'd expect 100k miles out of Dobinsons shocks. Keep in mind that shock absorbers are a wearable item just like brake pads so they won't last forever. And depending how you drive it will depend on how long they last.

Thanks, but I meant how long will they last sitting on a shelf uninstalled while I wait for my XREAS to wear out? And does it need to be climate controlled? Or can they sit in an attic in TX?

Lol, that's not something that has been measured. People use new old stock parts from the 60s all the time on old rebuilds.

In their packaging and away from moisture they will be fine. You definitely do not want moisture to build on the shock shafts.

Mike,

I'm looking at ordering an IMS lift for my 2024 limited with no added weight.

I pan to use the 302 front springs, are the 505 rear spring the preferred spring to pair with the 302's or is the 599 better suited?

Thank you!

Hey man

599s if you want the vehicle more level.

I have a 2023 4runner and I am getting ready to install my ims coilovers and it looks like my springs are different heights. I did search and found a post about a bad batch of springs? both have the same tag and part number.

They're made on the same machine, several hundred at a time. You have to rotate them to exactly the same position to measure each. If one is slightly taller, it's from power coating and the heating. Put that taller one on the driver's side. IMS are height adjustable, so you can compensate there too.

It's been 5+ years since there was any issue with off height coils, and that was 2 pairs I think.

Hi everyone with Dobinson's suspension, specifically the IMS shocks.
I wanted some real word experience (yes you too Mike) on how many miles you're getting in before rebuild/replacement and which direction you went.
For myself I'm at about 40K miles and they're starting to fade enough to do something about it. I'll likely replace because I can't have the rig out of service for the length of time it would take to get them rebuilt.
My part #'s :
Dobinsons IMS59-50574 Extended Travel Front 2.2″ IFP Struts
Dobinsons IMS59-50575 2.2″ IFP Long Travel Rear Shocks

Thanks in advance!

Hey bro!!

It depends on how abused they get. I would probably check with a shock that has the proper tools to check the nitrogen gas pressure and make sure the PSI is up to par on the IMS you have.

I put 70k on my MRA set, and never touched them before I sold it on my 5th gen last year.

Pick up a set of OEM takeoffs off marketplace for cheap and throw those on, and you can get get them rebuilt then, if they need it.

Good suggestion on getting the pressure checked, I'll work on that
Unfortunately OEM shocks aren't an option especially in the rear.
Rebuild cost around here are so high it's hardly worth doing it.
Shipping them to you to be rebuilt isn't any better.
My estimate of rebuild cost is half the cost of new shocks (currently on sale of course). Let alone the hassle of taking them off, putting on temporary shocks, taking those off, putting new ones on...

Thanks. One is 39cm and one is 40cm. THey are probably a couple years old. I bought them for a rig I ended up selling before i installed them. Getting ready to buy a set of the ims 50574s from you this month to take advantage of your sale.

Need recommendation for rear spring upgrade.
Currently running Icon 2” rear coils, but noticing a lot of sagging when the cargo is loaded with camping gear and even worse when we have the 1up bike rack and our e-bikes on. We have an ikamper on full time.

Should I go with the 327/200-400 lbs or 329/ 500-800 lbs?
Don’t want a super stiff ride when it’s not loaded so thinking the 327.

You want to match up the added weight you've got with the coils. I think the 327's should be just fine as I don't think your constant weight is more than 400lbs.

2021 4runner Rec

Hello Mike, I have a 2021 4runner with the 3rd row. Want roughly 2.75 to 3" in the front, 2-2.5". in the back. Plan to run 33s, and some armor, but limited to rock sliders and skid plates ( towing on occasion). Would that be enough weight to justify heavier springs, or would it be considered stock weight?

IMS59-50574 front & C59-300
GS59-745 rear & C59-505 ( maybe 325?)

Prob. no UCAs to start, didn't need them with 3" Icons on another rig.

thanks!

Hey bud

Yeah, that's not going to be enough to warrant stronger springs. Weight forward of the axle or rear adds leverage, which needs stronger/taller springs.

C59-302 front coils is what I'd suggest, then add 1/2" preload to get 3"
In the rear, the C59-505 will work for right at about 1.75" with the 3rd row seat. Use C59-325 for 2.25"

You won't get the full travel out of the struts without UCA's, and also the stock UCA's will hit the coils at full droop, since the IMS59-50574 are extended travel and longer than most other brands out there.

Awesome thanks! Prob. add the UCAs later, trying to keep the initial bill a little lower. The initial build page only has one pre-load spacer, but I went back in an added a second, I assume they guys can figure it out :) What is your lead time looking like when assembly is added?

Not sure what you mean there, but you don't need to add preload spacers with adjustable height struts. Maybe you weren't on exitoffroad.com?

Our lead time for strut assembly is 2-3 business days right now
