Dobinsons 5th Gen T4R Suspension options - from Exit Offroad

************
Thanks, didn't know these were adjustable, thought they just adjusted by spring weight. Would I need to call out the 3" goal when I put in the order?

Under the Option to add strut assembly, it asks you there if you want preload added to the listed coil height. 1/2" in your case.

Hello Mike,

I'm in search of new rear springs for my 4runner. I have a 2021 Pro that I just put Ride shocks on from accutune. The front has been lifted around 2-2.5 inches. My truck is mostly street driven and will not get loaded down with much past the below. Front

Front:
Front springs are 700lb.
Lil bs bumper and winch - probably 150-200 pounds.

Rear:
A full size 285/70/17 spare - Falken wild peaks - 54 pounds
Hefty fabworks aluminum rear bumper - 45 pounds
C4 rock sliders - 120 pounds

I'm hoping for a little bit of forward rake but not a whole lot.

What Dobinsons spring would you recommend for the rear (hopefully avail in red)? Also, do I need a spacer to offset left rear lean?

Thanks
Chris

Hey Chris,

The C59-505 coils would be what I'd go for, they should be 1.5-1.75" with your added weight, keeping about 1" of rake.

If you want less rake, more level, use C59-599.

You can look at the coils on my site to see what colors are in stock. Measure your height difference now to see if you're 1/2" or more off, and add a spacer if you are.

Hi Mike,

I’m planning to order a Dobinsons lift for my 4Runner from your shop, Exit Offroad, and wanted to run a few things by you before I ordered, since you’re the expert.

My vehicle: 2023 4Runner TRD Offroad with KDSS
It has additional weight on the front suspension of 154 lbs from replacing the front stock skid plates with thicker steel ones and adding steel rock sliders (I figured 50% of the weight of those was on front and 50% on rear). And additional weight on the rear suspension of 75 lbs from the sliders replacing the gas tank skid with a thicker steel one.

I don’t want to lift by more than 2.5” to 3” to avoid issues with KDSS.

According to your site, I should get the C59-314 springs and extended travel struts in the front. These say 2.5” of lift with a load of 110-220lbs. I’m assuming that since I am on the lower end of that range, the lift might be closer to 2.75” than 2.5”?

In the rears, I’m planning for C59-505 springs and normal shocks, which should put me somewhere around 1.6” of lift with the extra weight I have, I figure.

I’m also planning to get the Dobinson’s Billet UCA’s since as I understand it, they’re adjustable which gives me the best chance of fitting 285 tires with a good alignment and minimal trimming?

Also planning to get the Treaty Oak spacer kit to correct for KDSS lean.

Last thing is I am not sure if I need a diff drop kit, it sounds like I am right on the border, with 2.5” lift and long travel shocks. Do you know if the diff drop kit will cause any clearance issues with RCI front (engine, transmission, transfer case) skid plates? Alternatively, since I am only lifting 2.5”, should I just get the standard struts, not the long travel, in order to not need a diff drop kit?

Does all of this sound reasonable to you? I just want to make sure I haven’t forgotten anything or overlooked anything.
Also, any chance you have a coupon or upcoming sale planned that you’d be able to share with me?

Thanks,
Will

Hey Will,

You don't have a front bumper or winch listed, and those are what truly add leverage to the front end, squatting the suspension. C59-302 are what you'd use for 2.5" of lift, then you'd add a little bit of preload if you were anything lower than that, but I doubt you would be.

Slider weight is carried by the entire suspension and barely affects lift height. Just like when people get in a vehicle, the height doesn't really change either.

C59-505 will probably still be about 1.75" of lift.

You can use a diff drop kit with RCI skids and no loss of ground clearance. Since they're made flat for the 4runner, they already sit down lower than the diff mounts. I ran them on my 5th Gen. CV's WILL bind at full droop with the IMS59-50574 installed with the UCA's you're looking at, unless you add a diff drop kit.

Dobinsons only do a sale once a year during Black Friday. We are awaiting a price increase that could happen any day now due to all these tariff variations happening, and shipping costs from overseas have just gone up as well.

Ok, let me try this a second time, I mistakenly posted this in the 4th gen pages. This post contains more information regarding the current lift with the Westcott kit that was not in that post.

Hello. I have a 2016 TRD Pro 4 Runner that has 58,000 miles on it. Two years ago, I had a Westcott kit installed so I could run 285’s on it with the stock Pro wheels. This kit lifts my vehicle approximately 3” using a spring perch up front and a 1.25” spacer in the back that uses the existing Pro suspension components. It sits about level empty, but sags when I put bikes on the back or pull a boat to the point I can hear a banging noise up front when I go around a corner or stop fast. The banging is when the nose comes back up after a hard stop, not on the way down. Again the noise is only when loaded and the tail is sagging.

I have a LFD full powder coated stainless roof rack and a Baja ladder on the back; the tire remains under the vehicle. I like the ride quality, but need to do something about the sagging. I am also planning a trip out west this October and will have 300-500 # of gear in the vehicle.

The following measurements are from the ground to the bottom of the fender through the center of the wheel hub, I now realize I should have measured from the hub center, not the ground.

Drivers front 37.25” rear 37.75”
Passengers front 37.4” rear 38.0”

What spring set do you suggest to get rid of the 1.25” spacer, lift the back just a bit to give it slightly more rake, and prevent the tail sagging issue?

Thanks!

Most likely either the C59-325 or the C59-327. Depends what your hub to fender height is.

Dobinsons 5th Gen 4Runner Rear Coil Spring Options 2010-2024

Using a spacer with older stock coils, you're probably barely at OEM ride height which was about 22"

Thanks for information. I wish I had measured from the correct spot before I left on this trip, it will be Friday before I can look at it again. I like the idea of your variable rate springs, like the C59-677V, I will have to see what the current ride height actually is, as they may be too high. Westscott claims 3” of lift, but I kind of remember it not being quite that.

Just so I have an idea when I measure it correctly, what right height, as in your video, does 327 spring give you vs. the 677V? Or maybe I should be asking what ride height should I be looking for up front so a 327 or 677V works? I plan to get one of those two as I can always throw a couple sand bags in the back when unloaded if it’s stiff, but can’t do anything about it if I go with the lighter springs and it still droops pulling the boat or with e-bikes off the back.

Thanks!

Our baseline is 20" front and 22" rear. All lift heights are measured on top of that.

Yeah, either the 327 or 677V would work, they both have a simliar weight rating but 2" vs 3".

So I bought and installed these in February of 2017. It's been through eight years of salty winter in the northeast and this is how they look today.

All things considered, I think they have done pretty well. The Bilstein's and others I have had didn't last nearly as long in the rust department.

To be clear, these shocks still work, they are just rusting out.

Figured I'd update.

I was able to measure my 4 runner today. The front is 23” center of hub to fender, so the Westcott lift did raise it 3”. The back is also 23” so with the roof rack, it’s only 1” over stock despite a 1.25” lift block.

The big question is, do I go 327 for a total of 24.0-24.5” in the back, or 677V for 25”? Does the larger rake help the fuel mileage. With 400# in the back on 327’s, will it sag back to level, or still have some rake? I suppose that’s a good question for the 677’s too, how much will it sag with 400# in the back?

Also, what does it mean when the 327’s say it’s a 271# spring vs the 677V that says it’s a 157-230# spring?

If your front was 23” and you were putting heavy e-bikes off the back and occasionally pulling a boat, should you go 327? Or 677V or maybe something different?

Thanks.

Having factory rake is a great way to be able to load up and not get less than level. So 3" of front and rear lift would get you there. You just have to choose if you want 2" of rear lift or 3".

One is a linear rate (single rate) coil, the other is variable, so it has 2 rates. The 677V don't have as strong of a final rate of the 327's, so the 327's do hold up more weight easier.

If you want it more level but with better load support, go with the 327's. If you want more lift in the back, go with the 677V's.

Still present Crikey!? I have questions on how to just replace a stock 2018 TRD PRO lift to keep the same height in the back and level out the front! Thanks!

What did you go with?!

Yep, I'm still on here all the time.

This is the simplest way: Dobinsons 1-2.5" Pre-Assembled IMS 4Runner Coilovers - Exit Offroad

and

Dobinsons IMS59-50701 IFP Shocks for Toyota and Lexus SUV's

Keeping the rear coils in place to not change the height.

Hmm, what would I choose for the lift height to be set at for the first one to keep it stock trd pro height (2015-2018 years)

- I'd have a shop install these as well, I am likely not going to do it myself at this time just due to space availability.

- Also what if I were to go the twin tube route front and rear? I sadly don't get to offroad much anymore due to a addition to the family.

Ive been trying to use this.

The TRD Pro's came with 1" of front lift.

Sure, you can go with the twin tubes. Here are those pages:
Dobinsons 1-3.5″ Twin Tube 5th Gen 4Runner Coilovers

Please let me know if the selections come through on this page for you, I am wondering if this will get me back to stock front and rear height. I'm about to order and just need to line up a shop date today.

Dobinsons Lift Kit 1"-3.5" Build-A-Kit Toyota 4Runner 2010 - 2024
The above option should show, C59-296 Front coil springs, gs59-700 front struts, c59-323 rear coil springs, gs59-745 rear shocks, I just want to make sure this replaces TRD pro stock front and rear heights for 2018 and earlier models. I did choose to have everything assembled and have new front strut top plates.

---
If I decide to go with these, Dobinsons 1-2.5" Pre-Assembled IMS Coilovers for Toyota 4Runner 5th Gen 2010-2024 , do I choose 1" lift height and stock weight?

these would be the rears, Dobinsons IMS59-50701 IFP Shocks for Toyota and Lexus SUV's , and I really should replace the rear springs right?

Thank You in Advance!

Finally upgraded the stock suspension on my 2018 TRD ORP after 7 years! (6 New England winters).

I wanted a slight lift and a “Pro” ish stance:

- C59-238 Front Lifted Coil Springs
- GS59-700 Front Struts
- C59-323 Stock Height Rear Coil Springs
- GS59-701 Rear Shocks

Mike @ Exit Offroad was great to deal with and answered all my questions. I used his YouTube install video, AZ Overland’s Bilstien video, and the Toyota manual for torque specs.

I replaced the hardware (though not really necessary), rear stabilizer bar bushings, and will replace the engine splash guards (OEM) this weekend after noticing a couple small tears.

The yearly Woolwax sessions definitely helped keep the rust at bay. The front passenger side lower control arm needed some good persuasion (and cursing at) to swing down "freely". I’ll see how my alignment goes but managed to get the cam tabs back to their original position. I’ve read those cam bushing sleeves are notorious for seizing up.

While in the air, I loosened the upper and rear control arm bolts and re-torqued when on the ground to adjust (reset) the bushings.

Measurements (no added weight other than OEM rock sliders @ 70lbs total):

- Stock Baseline: FD 20”, FP 20”, RR 22”, RL 22”

- Pre-install: FD 19 1/2”, FP 19 3/4”, RR 21 3/4”, RL 21 3/4”
- Post-install + 5 mile pothole laden drive: FD 21”, FP 21”, RR 22 1/2”, RL 22 1/2”

Against baseline, I got 1” lift in the front and 1/2” in the rear, which matches Exit Offroad’s description. I’ll take measurements again after alignment and a good long drive.

Really feels good now, much more responsive, less roll in the turns, and not as jarring when hitting those potholes.

Will add back the 120 lbs of a tool box, misc, and recovery gear that’s in there year-round. Then There's the occasional camp trips with a roof box, awning, road shower and a single mountain bike on the hitch. I’ll measure each scenario.

Late summer, early fall they'll get the Woolwax (and Woolwax Drywax) treatment, so for now I'll enjoy the bright clean yellow ☀️ and teal :)

Thanks again Crikeymike!

Image is after install (wasn’t able able to get a good before shot)
