Yesterday, I stopped the truck and then decide to go again, I though I turned off the engine but I didn't due to loud radio, so I turned the key to start the engine while it is running. I heard a brief grinding sound. I though I saw in some other thread somebody mentioned that our truck has starter protection to prevent it from starting again if it is running. Was this not the case since I heard the grinding, did I do some damage to the starter or fly wheel?
Does 5th gen have starter protection to prevent start when running?

Sounds like they don't have it, I'd have to dig on TIS; but my gut feeling is no.
The 4th Gen 4Runners had it because all 4th Gens came with "Start Hold/Auto-Cranking" standard. While Toyota cheaped out on the 5th gens and eliminated that for a standard ignition system, though the Push-Button units will have start protection because of the similarity between "Start Hold/Auto-Cranking" functions and smart key systems.
