Does your 4Runner lean on the Driver Side

And not to be shameless but I have a 1" daystar spacer in the garage that I was running for a few hundred miles before finally ordering custom coils. If interested please pm.

BUMP! Bringing this thread into 2013!

I noticed this, too. Slight downward lean towards the driver's side in my '13 SR5 4x4. I only noticed it after my stereo install - and my amps are slightly biased towards the driver's side - but this is only 50lbs or so (and the amps aren't heavily offset to the driver's side). I'm guessing my lean was there all along (had the truck since November)...

So - will the Bilstein 5100's set at 1.5" Driver Front and 0.75" Passenger Front level my slight driver's side lean? Or will I need to do the rear spacer (or airbags like Antman mentioned)?

I also saw the Toytec shocks mentioned with the threaded adjustment collar for more precise adjustment - are these available for our 5th gens? I was only aware of the adjustable 5100's until now...

Additionally - Antman - Can you confirm which of the many "Air Lift 1000" models fit a '13 SR5 T4R? Their website doesn't list T4R's as an option???

Kind Bump for any clarification on my above post :typing:

Looking to level my SR5's driver's side lean, and level the stance of the truck in tandem (back is still a little higher - but have a permanent 300lbs in the cargo area - so rear is lower than stock height by about an inch - maybe a tad less).

Will the Bilstein 5100's set to 1.5" lift on Front Driver's Side and 0.75" lift on Front Passenger Side level my lean? Or will I also need a 1" spacer in the driver's rear coil?

Or would the "Air Lift 1000" Rear Air Bags Antman mentioned be a better option (and what models fit the T4R as the "Air Lift 1000" website doesn't list T4R's as an option???).

If this was clarified elsewhere - I'd be grateful for a link as I must have missed it. Thanks so much!

The Airlift kit you are looking for is #60809. If you plumb the air hoses separately you can "air out" the lean.

Thanks Antman! Do these airbags supplement the coils or replace them? I'm a complete Air Suspension dunce :)

In addition, do you know if the 5100's set to 1.5" on the driver's side and 0.75" on the passenger side would get me most of the way level (side-to-side)? I'm looking to swap on a set of 5100's at some point - and would like to avoid multiple fittings (have to remove the shock/spring and re-compress the springs to re-adjust IIRC).

when i built the spacer lift for my 4runner, i took alot of measurements, and built the spacers from solid aluminum rod. i machined the spacers just like you see on the ebay spacer/puck lifts. i ended up fabbing them, and installing them and measuring a few times to find the sweet spot where i got the front end perfectly level. the drivers side spacer is .070 thicker than the passengers. this made the front end level out perfectly. i have 36 1/2 on both sides in the front. (stock tires) my drivers and passengers side spacers are different thickness in order to level the front end out. i dont know if the aftermarket kits are also designed the same way. i build all my own stuff so i cant say if the aftermarket springs or lifts are designed to level the front end side-side but i can tell you a spacer lift needs to be .070 thicker on the drivers side to make the drivers and pass side perfectly level.

The airbags fit inside the coil springs. They work differently than you are probably thinking. Basically they bulge out between the spring coils and prevent them from collapsing under load. They don't really stretch vertically too much. Check out the first page of my build thread- there are pics of mine there. I think the bags will fix the lean, not sure if it's a great idea to set the 5100's at different settings. I'm not a suspension expert (where's [MENTION=8206]harper7[/MENTION] ?) but I would worry about the truck pulling left or right under a panic stop with different settings. Maybe I'm wrong though...

Problem is, some 5th Gen 4Runners lean a little, some a lot, and some not at all. I don't think you can definitively say it needs to be .70...

How much gas did you have in the tank when you did this? There's upwards of 1/4" difference between a full and empty tank since the tank is on the driver's side.

Since the 5100's set to 1.5" Driver's and 0.75" Passenger are basically 0.75" offset (I assume ///AIRDAM meant 0.70" and not 0.070"?) - would that do? (or come very close)?

Or must this lean be dealt with solely at the rear axle?

I plan on running the 0.75" front lift regardless to level front-to-rear, and I don't really want to raise my rear unless I have to (and raising one side of the rear still raises both sides due to inboard shock placement - correct?)...

no, i actually meant .070. thats 70 thousandths. the front passengers side spacer is .710 thick. thats almost 3/4" thick. the front drivers side is .780 thick, which is a hair over 3/4" thick. the spacer lift i built, being about 3/4" thick lifted the front of my 4rubber 2.4" on the pass side. the drivers side being a hair over 3/4" lifted the pass side almost 2.6" this leveled out my rig. my rig was a cunt hair over 1/4" off. if i can recall.... i built the lift on a sunday and had to fill up the following tuesday, and i drive about 40 miles a day, so i will assume i had about 100 miles left in the tank when i built and measured it all. so i reckon thats about 1/3 tank?

since the spacers go on top of the shocks, they are compounding the rate in which you lift the vehicle. a half inch (.500) spacer lifts the vehicle somewhere around 2 inches so my spacers being .700-.770 lifted me right around 2.5 inches.

Huh? On 4Runners the spacers lift about 2:1 on the front. A one inch spacer equals 2 inches of lift. I put a 1 inch Toytec spacer on mine a couple of weeks after I bought it.http://www.toyteclifts.com/index.ph...tegory_id=109&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=72

are you "assuming" its a 1" puck because they said so, or did you put a dial caliper on it? believe it or not, i actually do search the forums, and look up info rather than start a million of those newB threads asking questions about simple things.

so i will refer to antman's thread about the spacer lift install. when i read thru his install, simply to figure out how thick his spacer was and how much i needed, i looked at his pictures closely. i never actually went to toytecs lift site untill now to find out the actual dimensions. i was only going off a visual perspective. in his picture i will post below, you can see the thickness of the spacer is less than the width of the guys thumb, i measured my thumb and got a whopping .651, so i assumed by the angle of the thumb in the pic, that this spacer lift was somewhere in the neighborhood of a .550 or .600

after reviewing his before/after pix he claimed a 1.25 lift in the front respectively. i went with what was an assumption. i assumed his .550 spacer gave him about 36" solid. i wanted a taste higher so i gave it a judgemental overall thickness of .800 to start off. i installed it, backed the vehicle up, turned the wheels a few times and pulled forward and measured. it was high in the front, so i took it apart and machined it down more. i did this 2 times till i got the height about what i wanted. i have 36.5 pretty much on the nose on both sides. it took some tinkering and a little measuring and some guessing but i got it right where i wanted it. i put a .500 spacer in the rear spring assembly, and ended up with about a 1/4" rake with the rear being 1/4" higher than the front. i kinda wanted a taste higher in the rear so i plan on building another spacer for the rear and going up to somewhere around .700 in the rear. i want a taste of rake but not too much.

after reviewing and doing a little searching a few mins ago, i found that the toytec spacer he installed claims to be a half inch (.500) and equaled somewhere around 1.25" lift

the 2:1 theory is very close, not an exact science, its a close guestimate. my spacers being .210 thicker than his, gave me about .500 or a half inch more clearance. if you wanted to put a concrete number to that algorithm it would seem more like 1:2.38 which is still close to the 1:2 that is assumed.

Oh yea , I did measure it to be 1 inch with a 6 inch rule.
 
So AIRDAM, you addressed the lean solely with the front shocks?

Is there any reason some address it from the front, and some address it from the rear (other than for F/R leveling reasons)? From a handling standpoint, is one superior to the other? (Other words - is the weight imbalance that causes the lean biased towards the front or rear)?

I recall reading a few threads (can't find them now) where people have used the 5100's with 0.75" Driver / 0" Passenger or 1.25" Driver / 0.75" Passenger. I believe these specs reference the resultant ride height and not the dimensions of the spacers/cogs used. Is this feasible? I believe mine leans around 1/2" - 3/4"...

PS - It appears this forum does NOT like the "AT" symbol - I tried posting my reply dozens of times - failed every time over the past hour or so. I edited the post 5-6 times to see if it was something in my post - and when I removed the "AT" symbol (can't type it!), my reply went through. Strange...

i dunno either. maybe its just physically impossible for mine to sit at 36.5" high to the fender flares with only .710 worth of spacers. just breaks the laws of physics or sumfin cause if thats the case, then a 1" spacer would put everybody else at 40" of clearance or sumfin.

randyman i honestly dont know. i have had a bunch of toyotas, i am a toyota nut, but this is my 1st 5th gen so i dont have the background with then as much as these guys do. you could likely correct some lean with the rear suspension, but being coil rears, i dont recommend it. from my background in racing and setting up suspension, i can tell you with 100% certainty that if you have one coil-over adjusted 2 threads higher on the shock body than the same axles opposing shock, you will have a rather unusual feel from the rear suspension when hitting the occasional pot hole or bump in the road. having more spring rate on one side of the rear will transfer your weight across the other 3 tires differently. i have sat on a set of corner scales and adjusted the suspension settings to try and target a perfect weight bias, meaning by stiffening the left rear shock up a bit, you can somewhat lift the left rear, but it transfers alot more weight to the other 3 tires. after doing this for a first time experiment, i got a perfect weight distribution from side to side and an awesome front to rear bias, but it rode like hammered dog poop and had a weird twitch when you hit bumps. the rear suspension is better left even if it was up to me. i dont recommend putting in a stiffer or longer spring on one side or the other in the rear suspension. i would most definitely recommend doing the same thing on both sides of the rear. whether you lift it, or spring it, i would do equals on the rear. if you have a bad lean, my only recommendation would be to try and balance it out in the front.

i have never seen a set of these aftermarket coils 5100 ect but i do see the different snap ring grooves. i understand that putting the snap ring on a different coil will raise the springs mounting point and lift the vehicle more or less. i apologize if all my previous posts were jumbled and somewhat hard to understand. the only reason i posted my numbers was to possibly help you out adjusting your snap ring position on your shock body. to get my vehicle level i needed .070 more lift on the drivers side. so to put this in a number that is easier to understand, business cards. a standard business card is about .013 thick so about 5 or 6 business cards of thickness was all the extra i needed to level mine out. i dont know how far apart the snap ring grooves are on those shock bodies, but i wouldn't go huge if they are 1/4" (.250) apart. that 6 business cards thick gave me over 1/4" of extra on the drivers side
