Doing a timing belt change on a 3VZ-E

a red 4runner

New member
Hey guys,
so I'm new here and I'm having some trouble with figuring out how to do a timing belt change on my 1993 runner which has the 3.0L V6. I'm 18 and still a rookie when it comes to auto mechanics. I've been looking on eBay for timing belt kits but I'm not exactly sure what I need. Is there anything specific I will/won't need (maybe brands of parts) and are there any tips/warnings I should know before I begin the process?

Help would be greatly appreciated!

If you're still a newbie when it comes to working on cars, a timing belt isn't one of things that I would try and do unless you have someone next to you that done that motor before. You have to make sure everything is torqued correctly and goes back together correctly. If not, things can go terribly wrong. Just my personal opinion.

I am also a rookie and 22 years old. I bought my 92 runner bout a week ago. I noticed that the belt in front was frayed(serpentine belt, I called it the fan belt?) I don't mean to hijack this thread, but I didn't see a need to open a new one quite yet. I had the PS belt and cam belt as well. I did this work well having my check engine light checked out. Happens that the EGR valve was stuck closed and malfunctioning. I messaged another user on this forum and he advised to take it out as well as other emissions components that hinder performance or are used to lower outputs. I live in California and don't think this would be smart to do.

Here is my problem: Since the car has been worked on I sometimes notice I higher idle rpm when first starting the car. I sits at about 1500 rpms, but after driving off from my house it doesnt happen until I stop turn off and start the car again. I don't know if this happens immediately after turning off and starting the truck again, as I havent tried it.

Whenever i start up my truck it always idles at 1500 r's pm to warm up but if it's already warmed up then it goes straight to ~800. It actually may need an adjustment because sometimes it idles as low as 500 which it shouldn't.

And no, it would be a nightmare if I started this project myself. My cousin will be helping me. He's a 4x4 guy and he works on old toyotas constantly.
