Dome lamp part number?

I need a rear seat dome light assembly (complete) for a lighting mod I'm planning. According to the parts manual the rear seat dome lamp assemble should be part #81240-35020-E0. So I placed an order with Toyota Parts Zone for that part number. What I received was the bezel with lens and the mechanical portion of the slide switch. It didn't not contain the portion of the assembly that mounts behind the headliner which hold the bulb and has the electrical connections. I've already sent an email to TPZ to see if there was an error picking the order or if the backing section has another part #.

I gotta think TPZ screwed up. You have the correct part number for a beige dome light assembly. Only other part numbers shown are for a gray assembly and the bulb so I think you got it right.

Are you adding the light to the cargo area? Keep us posted on your wiring and install (especially any cutting/removal of the headliner). You wiring it to the existing dome light or to the rear hatch?

P.S. Added footwell lights like you posted. It was very easy and really does the trick.

a stock cargo dome is sorely missing. it's super convenient to have one back there so you can reach in the back window, switch it on, and find what you're looking for.

i don't think anyone's documented a DIY install yet? :noidea:

Yes, I'm planning on putting it in the cargo area. Centered side-to-side, all the way at the back where the headliner slopes down so it will point forward at ~45 degrees. I plan to wire it to work like the lift-gate lights do

Kind of on the fence with either where you noted or my other option was closer to the back seat with the "always hot" lead from the passenger dome light so someone in the back seat could reach over and turn on the light manually but still have it come on when you open the liftgate. Does that make sense?

I get what your thinking on the wiring. I don't know if it will work. The dome & lift-gate lights have both power leads and the ground lead going to a ECU so you can't mix and match reliable. you could hook up all 3 wires to the lift-gate and where you run them to is up to you.

I chose the center-back 'cause it will provide lots of light for loading/unloading cargo. For me, the stock rear dome provides enough light for anything reachable from the back seat already and I wanted easy access to the new light's switches from the back of the truck.

Cutting the headliner doesn't worry me. However, it's going to be awhile before I tackle this. Not only do I need the right parts but need to finish the sound deadening in the cargo area and lift-gate. Since I just had emergency surgery on a finger today, it will be a couple weeks before I get back to working on the truck.

I would suggest not mixing and matching the power source and ground for the dome lights because I think that's how the ECU controls the auto shut off in the event you leave your dome light on by accident. That's why like GrantK was saying all 3 wires (power, ground, switched ground) come straight out of the ECU for the tailgate lights. So if you are going to tap the factory wires for the additional dome light, tap from the same factory dome light.

For what it's worth, I think the tailgate dome lights also have an always hot power source...I remember crawling back there to test something and was able to turn the lights on with the hatch completely closed.

Another thing to consider is that the passenger dome light has a very thin ribbon cable wiring setup connected straight to the dome light housing (at least on my '12 model) so it might be a bit tough to try to solder to the ribbon cable wiring; whereas the tailgate dome light has regular thin gauge wiring, so that might be much easier to work with.

GrantK, good luck with the parts search and install, that sure will look great back there once you are done!

You are correct. There is an on position on the tail gate light switch. Thought it was door open and off only. That makes the wiring decision easy. I know I would screw up soldering on to the dome ribbon harness. To be honest, I did not even know it was wired with a ribbon harnesss. Still on the fence on where to put the light. Looks like fishing the wires will be a lot easier to the back position. I'm just paranoid about screwing up my headliner. Only experience I have with headliners was on a 73 Camaro and it was not good. Modern day headliner does look easier to deal with.

Just checked my email and here's the response from TPZ...

The part you're looking for comes as apart of the wiring harness for the roof which is over $150.00. I would recommend checking with your local Toyota dealership to verify this information. We have included pictures for you to view. Please see the highlighted markings.

Usually we do not allow return of eletrical items as all eletrical items are non-returnable. However, we are willing to make an exception for return if the item is unopened / uninstalled with all of the packaging and manufacturers labels intact.

I'll need to verify the part with the local Toyota dealer, but I think TPZ is right and part of the harness I want is called the "No. 1 Room Light Assembly".

So...
The part I already got (trim bezel and lens) cost $30.27 + S&H. Add that to the cost of the wiring plus $20 for the cost of the LED panel to replace the bulb and we're talking over $180 for the light . While way over priced, not I'm surprised, after all, the bare headliner is over $1K. I'm going to talk to some local body shops. They might be to point me towards a 5th gen that was totaled by an insurance company.

That's basically my goal but using a 5th gen T4R rear dome light (if I can get one for less than the national debt).
I'm also going to use a LED panel from Super Bright. I'm using these in the lift-gate lights and rear dome already and they are almost too bright and have an excellent dispersion angle.

Holy crap! $180? But it does make sense now. Eddiebx mentioned the ribbon harness so I guess it comes as one unit. Too expensive for a simple dome light and if I did fork out the cash, I'd still have to deal with the ribbon harness.

I think I'll check out the LED panel you mentioned. I really want the on, off, door open switch but I guess if it just came on when the hatch is open it would be adequate.

i really like this idea. i decided to ride in the third row while my fiance drove and i started to notice how dark it was back there. i dont know what toyota was thinking not putting one there especially for a third row option. i'm definitely going to follow this one.
