**DONE!!!!!**1988 SAS build - need advice for beginning

Never thought it would finally happen. But I did it. I was too excited to finally wheel it that I went out at night.

Straight as an arrow on the freeway, 70+ MPH. Took it to trails that my 2004 with toytec ultimate and 33s felt like it would tip over on. Didn’t even hesitate. The capability of this thing is amazing. And I’m only running my 33s off my 2004 for now.

Next stop, 37s, lockers.

THANK YOU to this site!!!

Welp, took it out again and got a little too brave. Front driveline came apart and punctured the oil pan. This will be fun to fix.

I just want to say thanks for this thread. I read it end to end. It was a good education but also raises a lot of questions for me as far as my setup on my ‘89 I sort of adopted. It’s my wife’s truck she got before we were together and her boyfriend at the time was in process of setting it up for rock crawling...took from stock and converted it to SAS, and I’ll have to measure but I think it’s an 8” lift, and it’s rolling on 35s. The rear diff is spooled and I’m not sure about the front...need to jack it up and check. Front hubs are Warn...stock 22RE, manual trans and transfer case. He was a good welder but I’m also finding wasn’t thorough or meticulous about a lot of things...there’s a fair degree of jank in things he touched so I’m expecting there’s work to do. I’d like to eventually replace the spooled rear end with a locker. I know he never finished the back end because there are no shocks in the back or shock mounts, and the e-brake hardware is hanging free. After reading this thread I’m all curious about where the front axle sits and angles...whether the steering gear was pushed forward and reinforced mounting etc. I’ll have to start a new thread when able to (I’m a new member and don’t have enough replies yet to be able start a new thread). Anyway, sincere thanks.

Ahhh, memories.

Ended up fixing the tranny oil pan, picked up a used entire tranny for like $40 locally and took off what I needed.

Cut the Tacoma driveline that separated on me and made a ghetto square one. Works for now.

I had deleted the t case cooler due to nicking the hard lines on my sas. After my first long trip I realized I needed it. Put it back in, still overheated in 4lo for an extended period of time.

I picked up a new larger cooler, and am going to route it to the front of the truck now. Should be good.

Had to weld on a new muffler... had some vacuum leaks from the old blown out hoses. Picked up new hose and constant torque clamps. For some reason all the specialty things I was looking for in 2014-2015 have become super easy to find now.

Work on the truck stopped after I pick up my UZJ100. Wasn’t supposed to be a project but it turned into one. Worked on it hardcore for a year then flopped it. Got a 5th gen 4R now and bolted the basics onto it.

Back to work on the 88!

Set out to fix my transfer case shifter and install my t case cooler.

Realized I could finished yanking the AC, so I freed up a bunch of space in front of the radiator.

With the shifter, part of the linkage came apart, the ball mount in the cup portion. Luckily I had parts from my donor trans left over and got it all back together. It’s still jumping out of 4H and 4L though. I’m going to take apart the shifter assembly and see if something broke in there.
