Door Won't Stay Open

Notice a difference on this one? Besides these being white, not light green...

As stated earlier, two shims on each side. Damn tight fit. Arm needs to come out to slide them in. Wasn't too hard with the arm out. Getting the arm back in take some force. I'm like 140 or so pounds, and it was tough. Curious if this will be too much for our front doors. Will find out...

Filing the end more flat is a good thing and helps to re-insert the arm.

Had this extra piece of wood with the big hole in it, so added two others.

To do this...

With gloves on and a carpet remnant to further protect the hands, with all of my weight I was able to push the arm in and through to full open...

So, if this (shim doubling) proves to be desirable, this added about 20 minutes, for me at least...

I will next remove the nuts and replace the bolts with new ones, tape her up again, then proceed to remove the driver door panel and door check. Maybe even tomorrow. If this (four total shims) works even better, I'll do the same on the front passenger door.

There was an assumption, a realistic one, that this door check would work on the driver's side too. I can confirm it does. Just flip it over (L for driver, R for passenger). And, I saw no ill effects of doubling-up the shims.

So, I removed the front passenger one again, and added two more shims, put it back, and finally the rest of the door. All back together, at full weight, and it stays open quite nicely...

So, I'd recommend shims, two on each side even, but likely not needed I suppose. I didn't want to experiment for weeks, take the door apart again, add a shim, repeat...

So, fronts done and back together.

I had time to remove the left rear door and realized that my acrylic speaker adapter I purchased from a member shattered.

I have these coming tomorrow, which I should be able to mod for those 6.5s...

And, I see why this rear speaker was not working! Not a great shot, but one speaker wire got disconnected. It looks like the window down might have yanked it out, but I'll investigate more later and remedy it.

I got the left side rear door check out and it's a little more than 1/4" longer than the fronts.

These replacement door checks are still longer, but not much. If too long, full open might not engage. So, I decided to shorten them like the fronts, which is somewhat shorter, which I know would mean full open would be less.

Here's our normal full open in the rear, as measured from the end of the door seal on the door and body - about 38".

On the other rear door, the same measurement with the modified Corolla door check installed - about 32.5".

So, if one decides to use the same modified door checks in the rear, the door will open about 5.5" less. I never measured the fronts, but I will do that next, just out of curiosity. I honestly don't envision this smaller max door open being a problem, for us at least. I wonder if a non-shortened door stop would work though. I might try that on the other side.

The good news of course is that these door checks do work in the rear, no binding or freedom of motion issues. Also, I used the four shims in the back too and it's overkill, but I like it.

Tony, I got busy with other projects and still have yet to tackle this mod. Curious if they are still working well for you? Now that you lived with them for awhile, would you do anything differently?

Hey Durwin, as for the front doors, I'm not as satisfied as I was initially. On the steepest part of my driveway, the heavier driver side doesn't always stay open. The passenger side, which is less heavy (no multi-tool and pocket knife), still stays open. The rear doors work great as they are much smaller and lighter.

I imagine at some point I'll revisit door check options for the front, maybe something much more modern...

you can open the OEM check boxes by drilling the two spot welds out, I shimmed the rubber bumpers with washers

Hey I've even found some door checks at the junkyards that are actually still pretty good (much cheaper) but I would 100% buy them from Toyota if you want to ensure they're gonna last.

Just did this mod, thanks for all the great information. I didnt add shims but i might in the future after testing. It works great. I have another one for the driver door but i might try and drill out the factory rivets on the rear doors and shim then.

I think most would rather have you bump an old thread like this. Shows you already did at least some searching. The door holder piece is called a 'door check' by Toyota. I replaced mine recently, and yes it fixes the problem. You do have to remove the inner door panel to access/remove the old one and install the new one:
