Drive Shaft/ Prop joint recall coming soon!

Just spoke with a service manager at Toyota and he said within a month a notice is going out that they are issuing a recall for the drive shafts. This is great news for all of us who are living with that clunk.

Really? I grease the shaft with every oil change and so far ( 80k ) no clunk. Do we get the Lexus shaft then? I think I would have much rather seen a caliper recall. Seems like a much worse problem.

Well I finally had some time to get down there today and I called and mentioned I heard it all before about the clunk is normal etc. I know about the lexus install etc. The way he left it is he said before I go any further he told me to sit tight for about a month bc he knows a recall is coming out and when they announce the recall they are ready to install the new parts.

I have not seen anything on the TIS Network as of yet, but that doesn't mean it isn't happening. Great news if it does happen, getting annoyed by my clunk even though I greased the shaft up. Will keep my ears to the ground in case I hear anything.

Well I reckon I will get the new floor mats and driveshaft at the same time.

My guess is it will be a very select batch of draft shafts or a case of replace some parts in the slip yoke based on inspection -replacing the drive shaft in every 4th gen out there would cripple them (not to mention the issue of supplying the parts given the ongoing challenges in Japan)

Talked to "my guy" at Toyota dealership today when I was picking up a replacement dash bulb, and he hasn't heard anything yet. As BlackWorksInc said earlier, it is not on TIS either. He checked.

Maybe the recall will be a service bulletin properly explaining how to grease your slip yoke thus eliminating the infamous clunk... Apparently no one seems to be able to figure this out by reading the ever increasing number of threads on here discussing this subject in detail.

Talking with some people today, they haven't heard anything as of yet so this TSB/Recall may still be in the pipeline. Most likely it will be a TSB regarding an updated driveshaft or parts to correct this issue.

I just had mine replaced under warranty...... at 142k miles.

The service advisor had never heard of the "driveshaft thump" and somewhat brushed me off. The second time I supplied them with the lexus tsb and part number.
They said " the lexus tsb doesnt cross reference over."
I politely responded "are you telling me that Lexus owners get better service than Toyota owners???"

I picked the truck up yesterday with a new driveshaft. No Thumps!

I too had noticed the THUMP....but got under the truck and lube'd the sh*t out of the shaft and u-joints and it has subsided thus far. No telling when it will come back...

I'm curious... Those that have had the Lexus driveshaft installed. Do you still regularly lube the slip yoke and propeller shafts or is the new Lexus shaft a sealed unit?
Also how many miles do you have on the new shaft? Who's to say the thump won't return once that grease on the shaft wears away?

Doesn't matter. A recall is a recall no matter whether you are the first or the tenth owner. Of course, no such recall has been issued yet, so it is all just speculation.

And note that a TSB is very different from a recall.

I truly hope this is not a tease or a cruel joke. I would have a lot more respect for Toyota if they owned up to their problems and fixed the drive shafts.

Here's to hoping the the infamous thump is on it's way out!

is the "thump" covered under the warranty? did you go in the dealer for it and they ended up saying they were going to replace it? I have the thump and I also still have my warranty.

i bought my second 4th gen 4runner two months ago. ('06 LTD V8 nav.) it came with an "autonation" 60 day powertrain warranty. I took it in for an oil change and wanted the tech to listen for the "driveshaft thump." he couldnt hear it (but it was documented for the next visit.) A month later, I bring it in and state the "thump" is becoming more frequent and louder. It was almost as bad as my '03 limited v8. I mentioned there was a TSB. he tried to look it up, but he couldnt find anything. I provided him the lexus tsb with the correct part number, he said i owned a 4runner, not a gx470. I VERY politely mentioned "it is the exact same part.".....and then asked " is it common that lexus owners get better service than toyota owners?" part was ordered under warranty, picked up the truck yesderday...... no thump.
