DRL Disable MOD 2.0

Does your dome light come on when the driver's door is opened?

The logic circuit in every modern Toyota I've encountered works like this:

When starting the vehicle:
turn the ign switch to "on" > lights turn on.

When coming to a stop:
turn ign key to "off" > lights stay on until driver's door is opened.

Dome light works as it should, it's just an old truck... It'll remind you with a constant electronic "beep" to turn off your lights when the ignition is switched off.

I just got a solara stock via ebay. It arrived today and it looks like the same exact one I already had from a 2000 limited 4runner. I remember that one not fitting into the steering column bracket. What the heck?

Anyone else have this problem?

Mendozer, yep have this problem also. Spoke with Mike plug n play for him.
99-01 Solara had p/n, 02-03 p/n, 04 up p/n. all with DRL off and Fog switch.
There aren't any Solara's in my area so back to drawing board on this mod.
Dremel might come out, cut n tape wire, don't know yet.
You can get female sockets at dealer, look like pigtails in pics mike posted.

Ok so I know this is older stuff, but just in case someone wants this stalk to fit their car, there are two kinds of mounts that hold the left and right stalks. (it is the white plastic piece that screws to the steering column)

I have two runners, one 99 and one 00. This is when the white piece changes shape and accepts the newer style stalks.

Just make sure to disassemble your steering column bezels to find out which stalks you have before you buy the extra fancy one!

So glad someone finally figured this out!

That I figured out along the way, what ya gotta do sometimes, lol.
Some where in this thread made it sound more plug n play than it actually was.
I like it.

About to purchase a stalk with fog switch and DRL disable switch for my '00. Can anyone confirm that the '00 for SURE takes the Solara stalk?

Also--what kind of pins do I need to run new terminals in my plug? Thanks!

EDIT: bought it anyway. I have a couple left over toyota pins from when I rebuilt the KS harness on my 3.0.
I went ahead and disassembled my column out of curiosity (reference for later, maybe):

I dunno what the hell the PO was doing here:

Every. Freaking. Time I take apart something electrical, I've discovered a hack job. Cannot wait to pull the radio and see what horrors await there.

This is on a 2000--will report back when my stalk arrives at my door (2002 stalk with independent fog switch)

Okay--that stalk was too big. Looks like this mod really only works on 2001+, unless you find a smaller stalk. I'm going to look into trying to mod the housing, but I did disassemble it and found no way to swap just the guts over :(

EDIT. shoot! You might just be able to swap the stalks.

EDIT 2: You can't. I am now a certified Toyota-stalk professional :)

I could not find an easy way to swap the stalks. There are a bunch of differences internally. I'd hope that you could dremel out a spot in your column, but I'm wary of doing that.

Here are some pics:

The stalk mechanism is actually pretty neat in both, but operate slightly differently.
The Solara mechanism (top) is thicker AND taller (just slightly) than the 4Runner mechanism.
One person suggested grabbing the whole translucent enclosure behind the wheel, which is another good idea. I'll see if I can check junkyards later this week.

I think the biggest concern I have with modifying the holding spot is the lack of the ability to mount the screws in, that and if you don't dremel off equally on both sides, the "return to center" tab (activated when turning the wheel the click the mechanism back into a neutral position) will not be centered.

The second issue might be a non-issue considering the size of the Solara tab:

You also might be thinking that the width of the box might be an issue. The distance from the mounting/sliding tab to the plug are the same, and there is PLENTY of room to the left of the mechanism.

Still not exactly sure how to move forward, sadly.

If anyone wants my '02 Solara stalk, be my guest. It does not work on a 2000.
I'm slightly bewildered as I thought the 2000s COULD accept the 'newer' style (02-03).

Can anyone else chime in?

EDIT 3:

This one for sale has the same part number on the outside of the mechanism..wtf..

EDIT 4:

Finally--here is a definitive answer:
http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-g...-combination-switch-question.html#post1326393

Yes--this mod only works for 01-02 unless you swap the 'ring' around the steering wheel. Fun. Time to go pull that off a yard truck.

Still makes me wonder if the '99 Solara stalk is differently sized, though I doubt it since OP's truck is a 2001 and he used a '99 stalk.

Alright. I did a hunt at the junkyard today. No luck finding any Solaras, but I found out that the 1999 LS400 combination switch fits, but a 2000 does NOT.
And, 2000-2002 4Runner combination switches are the exact same size.
1996-1999 4Runner combination switches are a different size.

Question to OP: what year did you get your stalk from, what is the part #, and what does it look like?

I tried my 99-03 (1st gen Solara) stalk in an 01. Did not fit. Did not fit in my '00 either. WTF??
