Dwight Schrute: EMP proof my 5th Gen?

I heard recently that (Now Lloyd?s of London warns of EMP). I dont know how real this threat is, but the Dwight Shrute in me got to thinking, "How could I prepare for this?"

I would assume that in an EMP situation, most of my 2012 Limited electronics (not protected) would be fried. What if I wanted to purchase some backup electronics (store protected) to get me back on the road? What parts would be needed? I dont care about anything but driving the car (dont need radio, ac, nav, etc). Does anyone have a grasp on this? It may be impractical if the items are thousands of dollars, but it would be good to know anyway. Thanks for any thoughts!:painkiller:

Maybe you should just pick up an old domestic desiel truck that has zero electronics controlling the engine as a back up :)

Speaking of EMPs, I wish I had one to shut off my stupid neigbhor's car alarm that likes to go off throughout the night, lol.
 
Turn your garage into a Faraday Cage and then put whatever emergency electronics you want to protect in there with the car. That'd be easier.

Granted, you'd have to hope that if an EMP hit, your car was parked in the garage.
 
I dont have the garage/ driveway space for another vehicle, nor do I want the headache of keeping another engine running all the time. I know having backup parts can be done... the question is what would it cost me in time and money to acquire.
 
It's easier and cheaper to store it somewhere protected or get a second vehicle that wouldn't be affected. All those parts would still need to be stored somewhere safe and then installed...

But seriously, I think it might be quite cost prohibitive considering how much electronics are in our 4runners nowadays...it's not just an ECU here and a sensor there anymore. There's multiple on-board computers talking to each other across a local area network interface, not to mention the immense number of electronic sensors feeding data back to the computers. The days where a vehicle is controlled by one ecu, a hand full of sensors, a couple of injectors and an ignition coil are long gone I'm afraid :(
 
I think we are safe for another 11 years, the solar flares have already peaked and the poles of the sun have reversed in the current cycle.
 
Does an EMP only hit electronics that are on or running at the time or anything that it is exposed too?

Would the back up electronics then have to be stored in an EMP safe 'safe'?
 
The best thing about the tin foil is that you can make it into a hat to deflect the CIA's mind control rays as well.
 
Read some Blog post that around three weeks ago the Sun burped and sent out huge EMP blast that "barely" missed the Earth. Not sure how close it was, but could have sent us back too the 1840's...

The headache of keeping and maintaining a second vehicle is nothing compared with trying to restore a modern day vehicle after an EMP burst. Along with many ECUs, some hidden and requiring disassembly of the entire dash there are ones scattered throughout the truck and just about all talk to each other so there no way to tell which ones are the bare minimum to make the truck drivable. Then there's the alternator, gas tank mounted fuel pump, injectors, MAF sensor, etc, etc, etc the list goes on and on.
 
There could only be one thing worse than getting hit by an EMP. That would be worrying about getting hit by an EMP enough to where you would prepare for one.

If things are that bad shouldn't you be more concerned about having food storage, water, guns and ammo, and the cash you wish you wouldn't have spent on EMP proofing your nearly fully electronic vehicle?

If you're that worried about it get a kick start motorcycle. I'm sure it will do better maneuvering between the fallen infrastructure and zombies than any other vehicle any way.
