Earliest '03 production VIN

I bet Mark wins this one. But my '03 has a VIN of 24,1XX.

So, I assume my Runner was the 21,1XX 4th generation produced.

Anyone have a VIN lower? Build 2/03.

are those the last 5 numbers on the vin, 149xx

my build date is 11/02

Yes, the last digits in the VIN are the actual build sequence number. Seems like some people have early builds.

I wonder how many units the factory turns out daily. It would be cool to take a tour of the factory, buy your Runner stateside and travel to Japan to watch it being built and loaded for transport.

My '03 Limited 4WD (V-6) was built 05/03 and has a VIN of 8xxx. (Yes, I rechecked the date and VIN number) Does Toyota start a new VIN sequence on 1 January even though production continues for the same model year? Seems strange that my 05/03 has a lower VIN number than vehicles produced earlier in the calendar year(s); maybe Toyota keeps separate VIN sequences by trim level, i.e. one sequence for SR-5, another for SPORT, and a third for LIMITED...anyone know for sure?

My 2003 Sport was built in 2/03 and the VIN is 3xxx. From what I see, mine is the earliest!

That is crazy. I bet Toyota starts re-numbering their vehicles on the first of the year. I was actually doubting that idea because it would seem more logical to number the vehicles by model year. The only way to prove this is to get some feedback from the 2004 models. Lets get some VIN numbers from the people with 2004 models with a buildate at the end of 2003 and in the beginning of 2004.

Mine is 17xxx but was built 7/03.

I think it also depends on engine/trim/4WD vs 2WD, not sure though.

Got you all beat....

Last 5 are 015XX

I'll try to check the month of manufacture tomorrow.. but i want to say it was August 02

hmm.....interesting thread. what about earliest production V6? since they came out months after the V8. i'm going to check mine.

Canadians got them first

When I was shopping in the spring of 03 I saw 2 Dorado Gold Limited V8s that had originally been delivered to Canada. They had been slightly modified by a certified outfit to be legally sold in the US, though they weren't officially "new" any longer. Mostly it was a matter of changing the speedo unit to MPH as it's primary display.

The units had some extra and different labels on the driver and passenger doorjambs, and I'm pretty sure the build date was August 02! The dealer actually had 3 of these units, though one had been stolen for a couple of days (towed away by the bad guys, but fairly quickly recovered) and I think that one was a couple of months newer.

BTW, the first V6s I saw were on the same dealer lot in late december of 02.

What was your production date (it's on the sticker inside the driver's door?

The last six digits is just a serial number. The only way to know will be to check the specific plant on it as well.

Here is the VIn decoder for Toyotas

mine was made in plant code (ID) 0 in Japan

So 10/02 Vehicle ID 009xxx made in Japan plant ID 0

See if your plant ID is the same or different and that might explain the issue with the number sequence.

I think only 2 plants make 4Runners in Japan ???????

Must be numbered by MYear, not calender, because I'm 036XXX built 02/04 (almost having a birthday!)
