Sadly I can't let my tank drain down every time, nor do I completely fill up on my own dime so I can't get regular stats. Since I do most of my driving on my business's time, the few times I do need to put gas in I only put enough to get me around town for a few days at a time.

How accurate do you find the MPG average on the dash to be?

Efficiency is relative. Some machines we do is gallons a mile or simply hours per tank. Then we have pounds an hour lol. Point is you expect some level of efficiency. Don't tell me that if your 4runner got three mpg and you expect 15 mpg you would be OK with that.

Even if you only drive 60 miles and buy 3 gallons of gas at a time you can still document it and calculate your mpg.

but if you put 3 gallons from "empty" how can you accurately assume you used 3 gallons the next time you put some in?

No not at 3 or 4 mpg but if you are getting at least within 20% of the advertised rate in any vehicle it should be expected.

The only thing you have to do is start with a full tank. Then just fill it back up every time whether it is one gallon or 18 gallons.

I don't think that anyone here actually thinks that they are economical. I think what actually happens is when some are preparing to purchase one coming from a more fuel efficient vehicle they have to convince themselves that the mpg on the sticker really isn't so bad. After some mods, mashing the gas, actually using 4wd, etc they realize that they are no where near the original number they thought they were going to get then get freaked out seeing mpg under 15.

My MPG's have dropped about a full MPG in the last month or so and I've been trying to drive as ECO as possible. But then I remember, I didn't go to the Toyota dealership looking for a Prius.

no biggie, just its crap up here since most of our gas comes from Canada so we get screwed.

unlike yourself where the gas is made and sold in the same local area, so its going to be cheaper due to economics of distance from a refinery.
