Ebay key programmer / ebay keys

Hello all. I'd like to relay my experiences regarding ebay keys and programmers if it's helpful. I bought a pair of 4d (punch mark on key shank) keys with Toyota emblems on them from a U.S. seller for 24 bucks total and a 4d OBDII key-maker from a seller in Hong Kong for 34 bucks. Had the blanks cut at a local supermarket (they didn't even charge me for the service, nice guys at Fred Meyers). I work next to a Toyota independent shop with key programming capabilites so I figured I'd give it a shot and if I locked-up the immobilizer I could pay them to bail me out. The process went fine, but the original master key is now kaput. Either the process disables the original master or the control unit had reached its available key limit -- I have no way of knowing but I am still out less than half what the dealer wanted to make me one key. Should have bought a third blank I guess.

I did some searches and it seems like most people were hesistant to try this method so I thought I'd pass it on.

I should probably add that this was on a 2004 SR5 V6

IIRC the immobilizer system can only have four keys programmed to it. The first is deleted when a fifth key is added.
 
I'd like to learn more about this. Is this a key+remote in one? Is there a thread that discusses this? Thanks
 
No these were plain ignition keys. The immobilizer ecu has a set number of key "tracks" that can be written to it. Unfortunately, the Hong Kong budget key maker dongle does not give you any data and cannot erase old key tracks out of the ecu memory, so I probably ran out of valid tracks. Would be nice to look at the actual values with the Toyota scan tool to see what is what.
 
I was walking around a Flea market one day and came across a locksmith. thought he was shady at first, but the guy really knew his stuff after talking for a while. I am an BMW tech and he was right on par with all of our data when it comes to replacing keys, so i figured i would give him a shot.

he made a spare key (without the "T") that he cut from the code he pulled using a very high dollar scanner. he also programed another remote.

both key and remote are still working great to this day and only cost me $100 for the pair.

I would suggest finding a good local locksmith.

Oh, there's aftermarket stuff out there...If you can dream it, some sweatshop worker in Hong Kong can do it.
