eBay uniball control arms?

yep, 8.8 metric is grade 5 as noted. you need a 10.9 metric bolt, which is equivalent to a std grade 8 bolt. sorry, not sure on diameter or length, shouldnt be too hard to measure

Someone just pointed out on the other Ebay UCA thread that this set of UCA's appears to be installed upside down. I'm not sure if this would increase the potential shear force on the bolt or not.

sweet moses i didnt even notice that it was BACKWARDS.

I am trying to save up and buy these so I am not happy to see a failure....BUT if they were installed upside down and/or backwards then its very hard to blame the parts.

I also suspect all of that grease on the uniball is holding onto some road salt if you are from the northeast. Having studied some corrosion and material issues in my past life in the Navy it would not be surprising in the least if corrosion helped it fail early.

Stainless Steel (depending on the type) + Chlorides + Tensile stress = stress corrosion cracking (that normally leads to failure)

Stress corrosion cracking - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I wouldn't call it a failure of they were put in wrong. User error.
Think of the stress out on that bolt not following the correct geometry! It could be astronomical!

Well, if they came with 8.8 bolts I wouldn't call that user error. Now if they were over torqued as one post mentioned, then by all means user error. Or a combo of both, an incorrect grade bolt that was overtorqued!!

I don't see why anyone would use less than a grade 8 (10.9) in this apllication...scary!!

I Had The Bolt Replaced At A Shop In LA with higher grade steel. I just moved here 2 days ago. And don't have any skills or tools garage.
I had the uca installed 6month ago in nyc. There is obviously corrosion after 6 weeks in salty environment. But if they were installed wrong thats bad and it could have added the stress on the bolt, or the strength of the arm .Also that bushing seems verry tight I could hardly move the control arm by hand. And some of the bushing shaved off.

Yikes, it looks like your other side was about to snap, also.

For sure, your UCAs are on the wrong sides, you should have it fixed ASAP, regardless of stronger bolts being installed. According to the other write up, the spacer inside the bushings are too short, causing the bushing to be compressed. You will need to shave the bushings down for them to work properly. I would wager that your bushings are shot if they were used in that state for a few thousand miles.

I'm glad this came up because I might have installed mine upside down as well! It seems like the zerks being on top would make them easier to access. I also went out and got some grade 8 hardware. Cost $13 at Lowes.

Is there any way to merge the 2 threads or lock the other one? Paging zopperman

once you guys get these sorted out post some pics of what its supposed to look like for future reference for everyone. i still think these are a good option, replacing the hardware for $13 isn't too big a deal

Yes, pics of correct installation would be best, especially if we can shove them in Post #1, whoever has that spot could just edit their post for it quite easily.
I am not deterred, I plan on buying these as a cheap fix until I figure out what route I want to go for the long term. (think Addicted Offroads upcoming SAS) It will be good if people with the knowledge could fill everyone in on what bolts we should buy to replace the under-rated one that comes with them, and also what to do to trim the bushing or whatever is needed. Thanks guys!

For the record, I have run mine for over a month now (on and off-road) with no issues. Clearly I addressed the issues early on. Photos of the proper install orientation are towards the bottom of this write-up

All of the UCA's on the market have the zirk fittings on the bottom or back of the arm, so that the top gussets are not imposed upon.

Lastly, several were able to bolt them on and run them with no problems. I did run into the issues of the short sleeve, but like the write-up says All-Pro sells identical bushings and at a great price...they are really great guys up there in MT, so that fixed my issues.

Additionally you can reference the instructions TC and All-Pro has on their websites for installation procedures. (Links at the bottom)

Silver UCA

I have been running my EBAY Silver UCA's for 45 days or so and just noticed today that the passenger side uniball puked a "cloth" like liner. See Photo. Now the uniball is very loose. Checking into a quality replacement uniball. I sure hope it's not some unusual size! I will post the size as soon as I have time to remove the arm from the vehicle. I'm beginning to regret trying to save a $. IMG_5947.jpg

That sucks. You can replace the uniball without removing the arm if you have a ball joint press. The stainless uniballs that Total Chaos use are FK WSSX16T. You can get them from Summit for $45

That does suck. Total chaos unilballs should help though, and although a pain, is still cheaper than buying Total chaos arms.
