Ecu not reading tpms

Discount tire installed new tpms in each tire. They can see they are transmitting and sending the tire pressure. My toms light stays on though bc the ecu isn't recognizing the new ones. Discount tires says when they plug in their tool in the obd2, the ecu is blocking the tool from changing the settings so they can program the new tpms to the ecu.

Has this happy to anyone else? 2018 sr5 premium.

Sounds like their tool is at fault if it can’t reprogram new sensor information. Or those sensors are not compatible, maybe they need to do some research. Fairly certain it’s not rocket science. The vehicles are not locked to OEM tire pressure sensors only.

My 2011 Corvette required you to put the “ECU” in learn mode in order to complete new tpms learning. Some sequence of pressing certain buttons certain number of times for so many seconds.

The tire installer gave the same response to me. Figured out how to set the vehicle in correct mode and then they used their tool and no issues.

I haven’t run into this yet with the 4Runner, but may be a similar requirement….

The guy tried to use 2 different tools and both said the same thing. And both worked earlier that day to do another vehicle.

I might just bite the bullet and spend $85 at Toyota and have them do it.

Has to be either their tool compatibility or the sensor compatibility. The values being ‘blocked’ from being written to the ECU indicates the sensors are likely not compatible. Not sure what else to say, ask them if they’ve actually used that brand of sensor on a 4Runner. I put my snows on yesterday. Drove over to the tire shop that sold them to me, guy walked out, hit each wheel with his scan tool, read each wheel starting with drivers front then around (mentioned I got each pressure the same) then put the cable into the OBD port, set the values and off I went. Other than OEM, there has to be compatibility issues with aftermarket sensors. There must be more than a few manufacturers & they can’t all work. That’s my guess.
