electric fan

I'm not sure if anyone else is bothered by it but my fan is way too loud. I'm looking to get an electric one but I'd like to know your sugestions as to who sells a god product. I'm not looking for the most expensive fan just something that will work well and is more quiet.

Hi. The fan clutch used on your engine is the same type/style that GM uses on their 4.3L engines. It has a heat controlled tention spring inside. This allows the fan to 'free-wheel' at high RPM's.

I have installed an electric fan on my 95 3.0. I purchased it from
'summitracing.com'. I think it was called the 'Black Max'(?). I have had mine for two plus years and it works great. You just remove the old fan and the shroud. Once you install the new one you just set the temp control knob to what temp you want it to come on. Pay attention to your gauge (if you have one) to see how high the temp gets before the thermostat opens. You will know when it does because the temp will drop. You have to play with the setting until it comes on at that temp.

Good luck. Drew.

Thanks. I just bought one of those fans. I was wondering though, did you have to do anything to the belts when you put the electric fan on. Any adjustments period? Thanks, Brandon

I was thinking of converting to an electric too, can you tell me what model of fan you bought off summitracing? Also, did it come with a shroud or did you need to mod the original to fit? thanks!!!

Good luck getting any info from these guys. They both have a combined post number of 10 and this thread is about 8 years old.

My advice: Stay with the factory cooling fan. I nearly overheated my engine while wheeling due to an electric fan. The temp sensor quit working and of course the fan didn't turn on when it was supposed to. You cannot argue the reliability of a belt driven fan or a factory setup.

they're only as reliable as the parts they contain. either one could fail. I do a lot of short drives and the fan is engaged quite a bit because of it. I think an e fan is good for me.

They're talking about the Flexalite Black Magic fan.

I too hated the clutch fan. Many will argue that it is very efficient and why bother with it. I some what agree, it seems to be the easiest and least prone to failure, But I was sick of that annoying fan sound driving away on a cold engine and my clutch fan started to squeal a little.

Look into the ford Taurus fan mod. Love mine and it was way cheaper than the off the shelf brands. IIRC- $25 electric 2 speed fan from pick a part, $60 thermostatic temp control (Hayden from O'reilly) + small stuff like hardware to mount the fan. I also did the new radiator/thermostat/coolant flush while I was at it.
I am only running the low speed and it is doing a great job keeping the 3.slow nice and cool. *if* the temp sensor (plugs into the radiator fins) ever fails... it has an automatic override switch that I hooked up to the AC compressor. click the AC button and the fan kicks on automatically. Will prob delete this feature and wire it to a toggle instead. Wheeling in the snow and having to run the ac doesn't sound like fun to me ;):
You can also run another switch to kill the fan completely for water crossings and such.
hope this helps.
if you have the extra coin... Look into the off the shelf kits: black magic, flexalite and so on...

CONS:
The Hayden kit comes with a 25A inline fuse holder and I had to upgrade the fuse wiring to accommodate the 35a fuse

There's tons of info on that... single GIANT fan found on the 3.8 Tauri (plural. lol) if I'm not mistaken.

YUPP
Lincoln Mark VIII and some volvo has the same model fan.

Some guys are even snagging the volvo relay to power the fan too. Wish I saw that before I did my swap.

oh yeah for sure. still working on it lol. there's a few out there though. :)

taurus fan. good for about anything short of cooling off the sun.

So, essentially the solution to global warming is to gather as many Taurus fans as possible and mount them at strategic locations on the ice shelves.
