eLocker 3rd member drop in?

I guess I got a good deal from Oregon for $500. I got an even better deal for the mint one I picked up here for $350 Canadian which is about $300 US, COMPLETE. People just need to go to carpart.com and look 'em up, they are out there. I was lucky and was driving the whole west coast so I could check them out all up and down the I5. I guess most people don't know about this and just go to Ebay.

I don't believe there was any difference between the different years but I could be wrong.

The thing about 4.1 gearing is the people who buy e-lockers nowadays are going to be enthusiasts who do it for the off road capabilities so they will run bigger tires so the 4.1 isn't very useful.

Toyota 8" V6 3rd Member 4Runner Rear End 1996-2002 E-Locker OEM 4.10 A03A 3.4 | eBay

Seems expensive but it includes the ride, and it's a 4.10 with 180K, supposedly

I seem to recall the rear end housings are different between first series 3rd gen and mid series tho - yeah?

Housings are the same 96-02.
E-Locker axle housings are different from non locked.

E-Locked 4.10 3rd member is pretty rare from a 3rd gen. More common in a Taco. It's expensive, I paid $600 for my e-locker & housing drum to drum.

Honestly for the money, I would personally go with an aftermarker locker like Detroit or ARB and regear at the same time to at least 4.56. I myself have the factory e-locker with 4.30 gears but with my 33s I sometimes wish I had 4.56 or hell, even 4.88 but that's money I don't want to part with at the moment as I'd have to do both axles :lmao:

Agreed all around. I see these locally for about $500, like has been said, in varying condition and mileage.

The specialty wreckers and eBay sellers (including LKQ) are looking for premium prices and throwing in shipping (which can be hundreds of dollars in some cases) along with a guarantee in many cases.

How good that guarantee is when you have to ship heavy parts back on your dime, however, remains to be seen

If I were to do it I'd opt for a complete axle to axle rear end and 4.3 gears

Try driving at 10,000 feet with 33.6 tires and 4.10's. My truck spends more time over 3000 RPM's than I'd like to admit. Soon it'll be ARBs and 4.88 all the way around. I can guarantee my gas mileage goes up. I'll actually be able to use overdrive again. lol And yeah, it's gonna be a really big chunk of change.

Jeez I couldn't even imagine. I live in virtually the flattest part of Texas near the coast so no thank you lol

My friend and I, both went in on a 4runner that had a elocker. Since he already had a elocker. He didn't need it. He just needed the interior and few other things. It was $800 for complete 4runner with a knock. We split it. He took the interior and everything else. I took the rear axle with elocker and front diff. Plus the whole truck. Sold my old axle and front diff. And junked the remaining 4runner. Long story short. I made money.

The actual re-gear isn't expensive. Especially if you do it your self. But add a ARB locker. And it quickly gets expensive.

I drive 395 a lot, the idea of re-gearing from 4.1 with 31.5s means my range (323 miles on a single tank) will decrease significantly, but I'm willing to go to 4.3s and stop at Topaz Lake to top off

I just carry 6 gallons on the bumper. But my range isn't even close to 300. If I get over 240 right now I'm stoked. Plus driving up the Sherwin Grade kills me. I get passed by everyone except VW's and semi's. lol

Since I started driving with my BAFX and keep an eye on trans temps I can get actually closer to a 340 mile range, but it means I get passed by a few Priuses and Touregs - more of an assault to my ego than wallet but I've found 70-76 MPH to be the best mileage : not-going-too-slow compromise. Lol

Most CHP in Inyo and Mono have there radar set at 78 MPH so those are pretty safe speeds. In my Jetta I do 80 up and back to Mammoth everyday. Luckily I know most of the cops so they give me the local pass. I just set cruise and don't touch the brakes till I'm home or some jackass is doing 65 in the left lane. lol

Safe yup.

Using cruise control my RPM average is around 2250 cruising and maybe 3350 up hill unless I let off. I used to drive faster but I've been seeing so many CHP lately, it's not worth a $600 ticket.

A 90 mile a day round trip commute is no joke, especially in weather. What do you do in mammoth?

You would pass me in my Alltrac Camry (before the motor/trans swap). Floored up the grade (with 4 people and 2 bikes) it would drop to 2nd on the way up the hill... 115hp, auto and 3200lbs + gear = even slower than a 4Runner.

I'm a carpenter. Framing in the summer then finish work all winter. At least that's how it's supposed to work. The commutes just part of living on the East Side. I knew I'd take a pay cut and have to travel more to live here but the quality of life for me exceeds any other town I've ever lived in or visited. This place is truly climber nirvana. The 4x4 and fishing are pretty solid too. lol
