Ok, before you search nazis get your panties in a twist, I searched a few times and nothing came up.

That said, I have a 2015 Trail edition with the "free" service.
This service plan only changes the oil ever 10k miles.
So, I plan to change it 5k before and 5k after, etc.

My first inclination is to go with Mobile 1 OW-20.
There are several types. What do people here use on this generation engine?

Also, what is a good source for Toyota oil filters?

I get the 5 qt. Mobil 1 jug from Walmart for about $28. I usually wait until my local dealer runs a parts coupon for oil filters. I can usually get them for about $4 with the coupon. Otherwise, you could order in bulk through a wholesale parts website, but you usually get raped on shipping.

which type do you get? there is an extended life one and an ecomomy type?

Also, where do you get oil filters?

Well you only have one choice with 0w-20, which is full synthetic; Mobil 1 is a good brand, as it's Amsoil, Royal Purple, Penzoil Platinum, ect.

You can source filters at the dealer, online, and in parts stores of varying brands (I would just go with a high quality aftermarket filter like Mobil 1 or Toyota.

As a side note, the 0w-20 holds up very well; unless you're doing heavy towing or what not, the vehicle will easily make the Toyota engineered 10k oil change interval. Changing it early isn't really needed for normal driving conditions.

There is only one type at my local Walmart, probably the economy. No need for extended life since I do mine every 5K as well.

As far as oil filters, see my first post.
 
I recently changed my oil (~10 mnths/5800 mi) and used Toyota 0W20 oil from the dealer.

Was going to Mobil1 from Walmart but 5Qt. + 2 1Qt. bottles cost the same as Toyota oil ( I dont care much about mail in rebate).

Also got Toyota filters in bulk from Amazon.

thats a good point.
I would need 2 5-qt bottles of Mobil1 for about $59. Or 1 5-qt bottle and 2 1-qt bottles which comes to about $45.

I always assume anythign from my dealer will be too $$.

Filters seem pretty reasonable from ebay or Amazon.

You'll be doing your oil again in 5k miles, so next time you would only have to buy one 5qt. Jug.
 
Playing devil's advocate here, but why change it twice as often? Yes, conventional wisdom is 5k - and that's what I've always done on my older vehicles - but it's probably not necessary if the manufacturerer's spec is 10k.

The reason I do mine every 5k is because it takes me almost a year to rack up that many miles.

Haha, no. I just go by the 10k/12 month (whichever comes first) service interval in the manual.

I will admit, though, I do change my vehicles' oil more frequently than necessary sometimes.
 
Don't you have to change the oil at least once per 12 months no matter what mileage (normal conditions, according to the maintenance manual) for warranty reasons?
 
Well, After my last post I should probably post something useful now.
If your dealer is part of the trademotion parts program, like mine is, you can order parts online through their website at a much better price than you can get from the parts counter.
The trade motion websites are set up for mail order but there is usually an option for COD/pick up.
I just made an order for a few parts including a case (12 quarts) of Toyota 0W 20 oil for $68.88 and oil filters were $4.60 each. I think you can find the oil filters at a better price or similar on Amazon.

I only use Mobil1 in my vehicles and I only use either Mobil1 or Purolator oil filters. They are consistently ranked at the top in independent filter tests.

My 4Runner sees a lot of fairly short duration trips so it will be seeing oil changes @ 5k miles. It will not be going to the dealer for the free oil changes. Nobody touches my vehicles but me except if I absolutely have no other choice.
