Engine question

Hey guys!

This is my first post on here and i have a pretty big question. I was driving home from work a couple of days ago and my engine quit on me. Ive always done servicing on time. As I was driving home my engine began running hot with no other symptoms. I was less than 2 miles from my house when my rpms started rising into the 4000s range and all of a sudden I had to add full power to maintain the same speed, as I was pulling off to the side of the freeway it completely went dead. No Power, no thunk, nothing. I opened the hood and there was some steam and it turns out my antifreeze had completely leaked out. I gave it a couple of minutes and it wouldnt start and when i turned it over it was just spraying raw fuel onto other parts of the engine.

After getting it towed to a local shop theyre saying that it will need to be replaced and quoting around $6500- $7000.

It is a white 2003 4runner with an Sr5 sport engine. It only had about 160,000.

I was wondering if you guys could point me in the right direction here whether its to a shop that will overhaul it, or to a place where I might be able to get a cheaper engine, anything you guys can give me would be most appreciated!

Thank you so much,
Kyle

Sorry, but "SR5 sport engine" tells us nothing.
How about telling us what engine you really have, and maybe we can help

It is a V6 4.0. Iv also found a v8 engine do people ever do engine swaps like that?
Also another V6 with 40,000 miles on it. Good idea or bad idea?

An "overhaul" of a severely overheated engine is a complete rebuild, and it won't be cheap.

If you're looking for the cheapest way out, then a used engine is the only way. Even then, I would bet on spending at least $2-3k (engine+labor+maintenance) to have a shop swap it in.

Badly overheated aluminum motor = no thanks. As stated above, get a low-mile used motor.

V8 swap may be doable, will be more complicated which means more time and money.
