That truely sucks. I wanted to see CO without snow and Off-road!! I do plan on spending a while in CO so we should get upMeanwhile here in CO we are having an epic April snowstorm! I'd be very surprised if you could run the off-road passes (which would have been dicey anyway in April). If you want any suggestions for paved highway workarounds, let me know. As I understand it, the TAT cuts through the SW corner of the state to UT.

Saw on news this morning mountainous areas of CO due for 4 ft snow, lower elevations 2 ft. Be safe!

DAY 6
OK, so day 5 ended with me sitting at a bar and day 6 started with me waking up in the parking lot of said bar!! Thanks to the fine folks at Red Dirt located at West Shilom Springs OK for letting me crash in the parking lot!!
Stopped by a local spot to have some breakfast, for what ever reason I ha e been craving French toast so I got some. Fou d this cool sign
Oklahoma is beautiful and there are spots after the mountains that are just rolling hills for as far as the eyes can see and it is truly amazing!!! I was able to play with the 4runner's high speed Dirt maneuvers a little but the driving aids kept kicking in!! Here are the pics from through out OK
I have reached Ponca OK where I have decided to check into a hotel to get some good rest on a actual bed. Hopefully this will give the storms time to move through as well as get my ribs and collarbone to give me a break.
If I get some rest I may go venture out this evening and if I get into anything fun I will be sure to report back!!

Sir, you have inspired me to plan a trip as epic as yours! Some 6 years from now, when my son, will actually be able to appreciate and cherish for a lifetime. I believe a trip like this, for us normal folk, only happens several times in a lifetime. I remember myself, as a kid and we took a huge fam trip through montana/idaho/wyoming/nevada/arizona/colorado (im from socal) and i will never forget it. No other trip compared to THAT trip. Good luck out there and safe travels!!

I did that a few years ago with my wife and two children. We left from Montreal, canada, drove west up to Victoria, BC, the took the ferry crossing to Washington state, drove down to LA, then back driving east crossing Nevada, Utah, Colorado. 32 days on the road with 17388km. AMAZING experience. When back, we would have been ready, after some laundry, to go back right away.
When this king of opportunity occurs, TAKE IT !!!

DAY 6
Today started great!! How can it not after having 12+ hrs of sleep in the comfort of a hotel room!!! Thank you to the Americas Best Inn Ponca City OK. After waking up I stopped at the little restaurant next-door and had a huge breakfast, country Fried Steak omlet complete with hashbrowns,peppers,onions, and gravy, It was awesome!!!
After that I was off to the Trail. It had started to rain sometime in the night and continued on. Once I got onto the Trail I noticed that these conditions were byfar not ideal. The farm roads made of clay and sand had turned to thick slick mud that was similar to driving on ice
I have more videos of this than pics because I was trying to maneuver through it. After spending 2hrs in mud and getting stuck no less than 10times I determined that this was no fun and I was going to find some paved rds to get me past the wet plus my mpg had dropped to 9mpg and I was traveling at less than 15mph and like I said it wasn't fun which is the reason I wanted to go on the trip. You know where I'm from there's mud bogs and everyones idea of Off-roading is going mudding, I'm the opposite. I enjoy Off-roading but don't like being in mud.
After driving for a while on paved rds it seemed to be dry enough to try the Trail again so I hooked back on to it. I ran into some more mud but not near as bad as before. Here are some pics I took going through OK
Going into New Mexico the scenery changed to desert and flat. But still gorgeous.
Finally I see the Rockies
Approaching the Rockies was just as I expected it to be. Absolutely beautiful and breath taking. As I have said many of times on the trip the camera can not capture the full effect
Maybe TMI but I had to use the bathroom and couldn't find anything for miles and hrs, once I started heading up the mountain, which is way steep I might as, I decided to pull off at a little cut off and try my shovel out!!! While doing this I heard my phone going off indicating I had cell signal. I hadn't had this or even FM radio for hours. It was beginning to get dark and I knew the weather was bad somewhere ahead and this was my view
So I decided to set up camp and stay here for the night.
As promised here is a closer pic of my window set up at night.
Tonight the low is 27 so needless to say I won't be rolling down my window!! Tomorrow, due to the weather I will be traveling until I get to pavement then heading on into Colorado and figure it out from there. Holla tomorrow.

Were you driving that in 2WD? I can't figure out why you would have so much trouble with that road other than driving in 2WD, it should have been able to drive down that no problem in 4WD on your tires (or even the factory tires). Don't be afraid to use 4WD, its good for you and good for the road/trail.
Also in mud like that try airing down a little bit, it will help the tires shed the mud

I was in 4 lo with lockers for most part. I wasn't able to pics of all those rds but did get some video.

Try it in 4HI with a steady speed and don't stop. Best way through that type of mud as ATRAC will do it's job.

For reference, I'm a former Oklahoma resident.
You posted your earlier pics of Oklahoma on the TAT and I thought, "man, thank goodness it wasn't raining on those roads while he was going through." The Oklahoma TAT roads are literally infamous for the conditions you experienced. When that clay mud gets wet, it's constant work keeping the rig out of the ditch. 4HI like 1eng said is as good as anything - because it almost doesn't matter. You don't need to be in 4LO or have the rear locked; 4HI and let vehicle stability control help as much as it can. I've seen it much wetter than that, where rigs dig 6" deep into the gooey stuff and have to wait days until it dries out in the sun. It's tough in a mid-sized 4WD vehicle, but it's completely impassible on any motorcycle. Anyone who has made clay pottery knows how slimy that stuff is. I've driven dirt roads in many states in many 4WD vehicles, and nothing can prepare someone for how slippery that stuff is.

I was able to do that for a good bit of it, lke what you see in pic. Some was just driving on deep ice. I tried all the sections what I found to be the most evective was the muti terrain but couldn't in 4HI a trac just made a ton of noise and went nowhere. Steady gas got me through it. The down fall Toyota gas is that you have to stop to engage the locker which makes you stuck. GM for example is auto. But. None the less she handeled it and got through.
