lockers is where you messed up, you want open diffs on off camber slick stuff or this is exactly what happens. when you are off camber and both wheels on an axle spin at the same time you will immediately slide along the slope, with an open diff the other tire can act like a rudder. In something like that don't use your locker

disclaimer: i'm not an expert on this, but that's what they taught us in the UORTC 4WD-101 class and when I tested it in really slick wet mud it was definitely true for me.

DAY 7

Today after waking up to temps in the 20's I made it down the gorgeous pass I was on and made my way to the big city of Denver. My whole trip I have been by myself and away from people. After visiting Denver I wanted to go back away!!. I was there long enough to piss the locals off because I had no idea where I was, and could hardly see with all the mud. Then there was snow. Sorry dnver we dont get snow in SC!!! I pulled a u turn in a great place, a marijuana dispensary!! Although pot is legal here, the process you have to go through to purchase it still feels criminal. It's not quite like getting a beer or an ice cream cone, as it should be. None the less I had to experience it once!! I decided that I would stay around here for a night plus I needed to do laundry and wanted to chill also ITS 30° outside! Hopefully it will warm up and I can explore the beauty of Colorado, not the big city!! Sorry Denver I'm ultimately a small town boy from the Southeast. Although I will say what I have seen so far is astounding!!! I can't wait to see without all the clouds. Here's what you really wanted, the pics of Today!!

Dnver was too crazy to shoot pics plus I broke my clip after throwing it, that's the last times that damn thing will fail and scare the shit out of me!!!!!

Tomorrow I need to get a new air mattress, a jacket since they seem to be nice and on sale here(what's left) maybe with the air mattress I can get some good sleep. I'm ready to camp in the beautiful scenery.

I'm writing this while sitting in the semi warm pool of the comfort inn in Crystal Rock, the folks here are still in a big hurry!!! I'm doing laundry and drinking a beer!! I plan to get great rest and then back out tomorrow. I do wish the hot tub worked here. My view tonight sucks as well.

Also I must say breathing here is rather different!!

I was able to do that for a good bit of it, lke what you see in pic. Some was just driving on deep ice. I tried all the sections what I found to be the most evective was the muti terrain but couldn't in 4HI a trac just made a ton of noise and went nowhere. Steady gas got me through it. The down fall Toyota gas is that you have to stop to engage the locker which makes you stuck. GM for example is auto. But. None the less she handeled it and got through.

Turn of the VSC so you can spin through it best you can.

Just put a deposit down on a standard 2016 SR5 2x4, and now I am having pretty big regrets after seeing this thread and all of these pics of 4x4s. Mine will be a daily driver 99% of the time, but since I'm also in Columbia, it would be nice to know I had off-road capability and could take a trip like this some day. Wish I had more time to save up for the trail edition. Guess I will have to be content with well-maintained fire roads in Pisgah until then. Looking forward to more posts.

For reference, I'm a former Oklahoma resident.

You posted your earlier pics of Oklahoma on the TAT and I thought, "man, thank goodness it wasn't raining on those roads while he was going through." The Oklahoma TAT roads are literally infamous for the conditions you experienced. When that clay mud gets wet, it's constant work keeping the rig out of the ditch. 4HI like 1eng said is as good as anything - because it almost doesn't matter. You don't need to be in 4LO or have the rear locked; 4HI and let vehicle stability control help as much as it can. I've seen it much wetter than that, where rigs dig 6" deep into the gooey stuff and have to wait days until it dries out in the sun. It's tough in a mid-sized 4WD vehicle, but it's completely impassible on any motorcycle. Anyone who has made clay pottery knows how slimy that stuff is. I've driven dirt roads in many states in many 4WD vehicles, and nothing can prepare someone for how slippery that stuff is.

The open diff explanation makes since. That being the case it makes since to be stopped and have to engage it without it auto doing it. So good job Toyota.

Thanks, I may do that. Looks like I could at least get an SR5 4x4 for just a couple thousand more, which would probably only raise my car payment $40 a month. Mine isn't supposed to arrive for "2-14" days so I wonder if Dick Dyer will keep my $500 if I tell them I want a 4x4 instead.

So what's your route through CO? You might find some dirt roads on lower elevations, but I suspect anything in the mountains right now is going to be buried in several feet. If you have to stay paved over the higher passes, I'd suggest US-50 West of Pueblo to 550 south to Ouray and Durango. Then into UT and the TAT. The scenery especially along 550 will make up for being on pavement. But don't go I-70. Ugh!

Best kept secret on US-50 is Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park.

No, it's not. Especially in mud or snow. Why would you want MORE torque? So you can get stuck even faster? That is what low range does... gives you more torque at a lower speed. Great for rock crawling or pulling a boat up a ramp. No good for slick stuff like mud and snow.

Again, turn off VSC and stay in 4HI and let ATRAC work at a decent speed.

I visited both Black Canyon of the to Gunnisson NP and Grand Canyon NP, and they are really different. Grand Canyon is amazing, but so unreachable. It is so huge that it is difficult to judge the distance. Also, except for the rim trails, all other trails are extreme for backpackers.

But for me, Canyonlands NP is above those two. Canyonlands, by its smaller size, is more reachable and many day hikes or 4WD trails are more accessible to most of us. It is also a lot less crowded, yet.
