"Error 3" when connecting the iPod?

iPOD Update

Not sure how many afflicted with this problem are using the iPod Classic.

I recently purchased an iPod Classic to take advantage of the larger 160 GB capacity compared to my 8 GB Nano.

With the Nano, every 3rd or 4th time I would start my car I'd get the "Error 3" message.

With the iPod Classic, I have yet to encounter the error after 3 days of starts and stops. :bluejump:

Both players have the latest software updates.

I have the same phone and also didn't want to put it in the glove box. So I just bought a 6' Iphone docking cable, plugged it into the glove box jack, routed it through the back of the glove box, under the console, and just had it flip out by the cupholders. Same concept that Harper did with his permanent Iphone dock in the console - in fact he was my inspiration - but this allows me to pick it up and use the phone while it's plugged in.

I think I may have found a solution to this "error 3". The ipod needs to be disconnected before you shut the truck down and re-connected after it is turned on. I tried doing that for a while and I didn't get the error message. When I left it plugged in and turned the truck off and on it came up every second time.

After a full week with a 7th generation iPod Classic remaining plugged into the USG interface in the glovebox, error free / flawless operation.

I got a 16GB Nano that gives the same Error 3. I swapped it for an 80GB Classic and it would work better, but then give another error. Don't think it was the Error 3. Anyway, I had to bring the Nano back to the 4R because the iPod interface in my Corolla will only charge the Classic. IMO, I think it is a software issue with the Toyota head unit.

never had any issue with my 160GB iPod Classic.
(that is, apart from the completely fecked way the Nav system "auto-selects" if you don't perfectly time your button-presses while trying to navigate the menus. ridiculous.)

I noticed the same thing. My 3rd gen Nano has no issues at all. My wife's 4th gen Nano will error 3 if I leave it plugged in and turn the truck off and back on. If I turn the truck off, unplug, turn the truck on, plug back in, no issues at all.

In all fairness, the 3rd gen Nano is listed as compatible in the manual and the 4th gen is not. Hopefully they can sort out a flash for the stereo for it to work flawlessly. Apple needs to standardize their ipods a little better. Going from old to new models of ipods means that certain charging accessories and such just won't work because Apple keeps changing things around.

Hate to be grave digger, but

I'm having an issue with my iPod touch 2nd gen, i think, 16GB and no camera.
Seems the USB connection doesn't hold well at the base of the iPod. If I just wiggle it a little bit it disconnects itself. Then if I wiggle it again against the bottom part of the iPods body it reconnects.....I think the connecting pins inside the iPod are damaged. But when I connect it to an indoor charger,
Enercell brand, and I wiggle the connection nothing happens and it charges and plays happy as can be.
I went to radio shack and tried a USB to iPod connector, enercell brand, and problem was still there.
Oh, and the head unit displays "pause" or error 3 or error 5.
I'm going to apple for service in the morning. Over at walt Whitman mall in Huntington station. See if the can do anything.
If anyone on here has any answers let me know before I go to apple in the morning.

thanks again for posting that, Quentin. i found your previous post detailing TSB 0013-11 for the iPod USB input.

called my dealer today and they're ordering the parts for the driver's seat back TSB 0051-12 and will be doing the iPod TSB the same day they swap out my seat. i also plan to show them the headlight haze and complain about the overly aggressive VSC/TRAC along with the windshield ticking during the cold this winter. i want these items documented during the warranty period so i have some hope of resolving them whenever a solution is determined.

i'll post again here to follow-up. thanks again!

This conversation was going in the OFFICIAL COMPLAINT TO TOYOTA THREAD back around page 5. SANDCRAWLER was gonna bring this TSB in soon and let us know what the results were. If you get a fix let us know casue you are not alone. My name is Matt and i get ERROR 3.

apple ipod touch

well it looks like its the ipod thats the problem. which i thought all along, since the ipod connection would disconnect whenever i moved the wire a bit. so apple is gona "give" me another "new" (aka- refurbished) ipod touch....since mine is "old" 16gb circa 2008......man things get old fast.....
