I have been chasing a decent sound for a few years now, I want to hear my exhaust but not a loud noise. I have tried a Thrush turbo, Magnaflow 18" and a Summit racing 18" turbo. The Magnaflow had a deafening drone and the turbo both have a wonderfully shitty rasp which I hate.
I have also learned that so far out of three muffler shops that I have talked to not one of them are capable of recommending a muffler. It pisses me off beyond words that these asshats can't tell me what kind of sound to expect with each style of muffler I mean hell all they do all day is put the damn things on.
I am now contemplating putting a glass pack in front of the 18" turbo and see what that does. I also have little room for a larger more stock type of muffler due to mods done to the drive train so I am a little screwed when it comes to space.
Maybe this is a solution to the rasp,

I'm hoping by Monday or Tuesday I'll have a clip of my Borla 40655 and high flow cat. Doing 2.5" pipe from the cat back. Clips I've heard make it sound like it'll be decent. Right now I'm running no cat and stock muffler and you can't hear any difference from the tail pipe inside. Outside is just barely louder.
I second whoever posted the link for a thrush welded muffler. I had mine price matched by Summit for something stupid like $22 shipped lol.
I use to run flowmaster 40 series back in the day on a foxbody. It would drone so hard on the freeway it felt like your head was in a vice. This muffler is barely audible on the freeway now over stock. It took a bit to break in, I LOVE the sound and the investment was very minimal.
The girlfriend's neighbor has a 4runner also. He came running out when I remote started mine and asked what it was. He purchased a muffler now as well and loves his.
Some youtube video's were definitely deceiving with this muffler. I heard 3-4 that I absolutely hated and I heard 9-10 that sounded pretty good. I took a gamble myself and I'm super happy with the sound.

I have the TRD Cat-Back with a Magnaflow Cat on my '02 and I really like the sound. I would highly recommend the TRD Cat-Back. PM me and I will see if I can send you a video.
I had a thrush welded on one of mine. It had a nice deep throaty tone (like all 3.4s) and no rasp but mine had a bit of drone at certain Rpms. Inconveniently it drones right at 55mph but it did sound nice and not too loud. My daily driver has a walker quietflow ss. If your muffler is in good shape and you're looking for something louder this probably won't be enough for you but if you need a new muffler I'd highly recommend it. It sounds great. Noticeably deeper and smoother than OEM but a very similar tone and never so loud it couldn't pass as stock. No drone, no rasp, just right.

I went for the Magnaflow 22”. Almost regretted it at first but now a year later and the sound is deeper. Not much louder.
Personally, feeling what’s going on between the engine and transmission modifies how I operate the gas pedal.
The stock muffler was almost too quiet.
Bulletproof Toyota quality however, seeing what was inside is why I thought that maybe I had gone wrong.

What thrush welded did you get? I’ve seen videos on the 17651 and it sounds pretty good to me

Everyone knows the 1JZ is the better JZ engine. But If you do a JZ swap with boost and an exhaust then your 4runner is now a large heavy Supra/IS300 so it'll probably take us back to the ricey sound conversation...:bolt:

I have the magnaflow straight through muffler that sounds pretty damn good, it would be classified as too loud though, it definitely has a presence in the cab, but that was partly what I was going for. I was just trying to tone down from straight pipe whilst keeping some of the rasp and meat of a straight pipe. Borla wins out for stuff that's quieter for sure. Magnaflow and flowmaster are good if you want to be loud otherwise they're honestly meh and if you have too much muffler with them, anything over the size of a super 40 kinda sounds like crap in the cab with our v6's, keeping in mind I own a magnaflow. Even if they sound great outside, which most mufflers will sound at least decent outside, most mufflers sound like shit inside and the inside is what matters. If you want loud tho super 10 all the way, louder than straight pipe and sounds like a damn nascar.

If it ever gets too loud in for the interior, look into putting some sound deadening material just in the rear cargo area. You'll be surprised on how much of a difference that little area will make in reducing noise. It's like the difference between having an empty cargo area and a full one in noise reduction. I have the quietest Borla muffler they sell (Pro XS touring) but on a 3" exhaust it's just loud. Driving 25 MPH down the street in my neighborhood I set off car alarms due to how low of frequencies the exhaust makes.

I recently had my catalytic convertor stolen and installed a straight section of pipe.. the noise is just annoying and highway drone is too much. I miss the silence at cruise .. and never realisd how quiet the stock setup was.. since the straight pipe addition I have been getting better fuel mileage but lossed some low end power. I'm planning to install a stock tacoma muffler and a resonator upstream.

I would have never expected it to set off car alarms lol. Its not too loud for me its just where I like it but passengers seem to have different opinions. I haven’t put sound deadening in the trunk space cuz i used to have it straight down behind the axle. I wasted alot of deadening under the seats and foot wells which made str8 pipe livable. I went the cheap route using pipe foam and foil which is like dynamat but thicker and its 25 bucks for 15 sq ft when you’re paying 150 for like 4 sq ft of dynamat and it works damn good. Heard about it from some muscle car guy at advanced auto
is it just me...or some people want a louder exhaust....then install sound mats in the rig to keep the noise out...then why put on a louder exhaust unless you need the free flow cause you are running a supercharger ...or your trying to impress someone outside at the stop light.... btw...i run a borla and did the ISR mod .. if there was a mpg increase...its small..but if you look at the numbers...the same year tacoma...with the same engine and tune...runs a smaller intake silencer and a more free flow exhaust..the books show the tacoma at 10 more hp...thats one reason why I did the changes I did...well and I dont like leaving things stock if a slight improvement is available. and for me the "extra noise" is not that noticeable....matter of fact I have not driven a 4 runner since 2015 without those changes...so maybe I dont know what a stock one sounds like anymore....just saying

Little to no back pressure will cause some kind of engine damage Eventually.
But yeah Runners are first and foremost designed for near silence then off-road prowess, I'm sure some will argue with that but if it is not true then why add the intake silencer under hood? Yeah I'd stick to stock, though pricey it is.
