Which crimp tool do you use for the Deutsche pins? Or do you buy pigtails pre-crimped with leads and use stright butt connections?

Its literally one of my absolute favorite electrical accessories. Reliable high amperage connections... I use them for my Viair pump connected directly to my bumper pigtails on the model that needs to be alligator clipped to a battery. No way a 12v cig socket could handle that amp load.

Just add a small discrete pigtail anywhere you want. I have them all over the truck, in the cab, in the back, one in the glove box to charge my handheld ham radio...

Its a much nicer solution than those 12v plugs... plus it has the added benefit of being pretty versatile. You can pretty much turn any cable into any cable.

I even added them to set of DMM leads... Now I can connect directly to the car, alligator clips on one end, probe on the other... You can easily add an accessory inline like those meters, or even make your own custom cables and accessories.

I use then on everything so I can quickly connect / disconnect a connection, or connect it to a different power source. Also pretty awesome when used with those inline meters as it takes seconds to make any electrical connection for testing, monitoring, or whatever.

Personally I was thinking of the warn type connector where not only can you use it as a 12v plug but as a plug for jumper cables or any ext power 12v needs without opening the hood or through the vehicle etc.. Though personally I would add a master power switch for safety. So when you are storing or want to make sure it is off it is off.


Also. I bought a tool for the duetsch connector on amazon like $45 and one for the weatherpak as well like $80 but lots of diff toolheads. Both where S&G I beleive and both work well.

I'm okay with it being always hot, although IF I go to route of a bracket under the hood, then I might as well add a switch.

That location is on a slight incline, so water should run off.

Yes, I know popping the hood isn't that big of a deal, but I hate the in-out-in-out of the vehicle when camping. Just means driving with more bugs in it the following day....

I haven't had any issues so far and haven't identified anything that I would have done differently. The plug I'm using is sealed pretty well so I'm not concerned with any moisture. I wouldn't really be concerned about security either. 12V outlets on the exterior of vehicles are pretty rare.

Okki - I looked for the Deutsch info on your build thread and couldn't find it. I wanted to compare it to what I have. I have lots of info on connectors, pins, sockets, crimp tools (Deutsch, Amp, Daniels, Cannon, Raychem etc.) also extraction and insertion tools used in the aircraft industry. Some of this info might match up or add to what you have.

The Warn type connector you speak of is an Anderson Powerpole... it comes from their SB series of connectors...

Lots of companies basically OEM that connector, including APC.

They make them in different sizes, scroll down for more options... You can get them for some very high amp applications. I've seen them used all the time on tow trucks for jumper cables.

Another cool thing about the SB series is that they are color keyed... so you can't plug red into yellow... meaning if you have various systems, 12v, 24v, you can use colors to insure saftey.

Regarding the connections coming out of my grill, there are two of them.

One going to the starter battery, direct connection, fused for protection. Always on, and if I need it off, just pull the fuse. Keep it simple.

The 2nd, is connected to my house battery. (Dual battery setup)

Its fused at the block, which is fed by an adjustable LVD (low voltage disconnect in the background)... Basically, I can leave anything connected to this unattended and dont have to worry about a thing... never have to worry about battery being run down to the point of damage.

In addition to that, I have anderson powerpoles that are connect to an MPPT solar charge controller so I can setup field solar in less than 60 seconds... to any battery, starter, house, or other...
