Factory Order

OK, I've searched. Sorry if I missed something. Has anyone special factory ordered a 'Runner and actually gotten what they ordered. One dealer, the closest, says no. One, 140 miles away, says yes with a guaranteed 6 week wait. I'm asking for a combination that can't be built on the Toyota site. An LE with the sliding cargo tray, hence the special order. Blue is definitely not a common color either.

This post won't help answer any of your questions or anything like that. However, I just wanted to pitch my 2 cents in. If I were in your shoes, I would take the 2nd dealer that is few miles away. Only because if they guarantee it & they STILL can't deliver by the end of the deadline, then you have them by the balls. I think someone here said they waited until the promise of deadline expired by the dealer regarding their factory vehicle so they informed the dealership they were going to take their business elsewhere due to the delay. The dealership apologized and pitched in quite a few options to the vehicle for FREE as a gesture to thank them for the long wait.

I don't know, it could happen to you too ya know...it's worth taking the risk. I mean that's the only option you really have since your closest dealership won't be able to deliver the 4R.

Thanks guys. I have since e-mailed Toyota to get their take. Probably get a reply next week. Although I've bought 2 gen4 'Runners and an'07 Tundra (don't ask) from the first dealer, the internet guy ain't much help. Once I hear from Toyota I'll get more intense.

I do not want to burst your bubble, but rather help set your expectations.

I have had two dealers in two different states tell me this, plus my own internet research seems to confirm, no such thing as a special factory order when talking about the T4R. (Not sure about the rest of the models). US Distributors, ( I think there are 3 or 4 of them), order standard models with various options from the factory. They get shipped to a port of call. If there is a model with options that a customer wants, and that particular vehicle is on the boat, the dealer can then put in a request to the distributer to route that vehicle to the dealer. Or, a close vehicle that may be missing some options, may already be at the disturbers holding yard. Those options may be added at either the distributer or even dealer level. But unless those options can be added by the Dist or dealer, that will be as close as you can get to a "Special Order".

For example, if you want a SR5 but with Auto headlights or smart key option. No go. Only LE's come with the wiring, (from the factory) so neither the distributer nor the dealer can add that option. And the factory will not do it on an SR5 platform.

Conversely, if you want a Red SR5, and just have to have leather power seats and none can be found already at a dealer in your area, but a red one with cloths seats is already on a boat destined for your area distributer, the dealer will place the order, the distributer will swap out seats, and there ya go. Your specific model.

Now, after talking to Toyota and if they tell you yes you can, let us know. I am going to order an LE with Trail body parts and KDSS with front and rear lockers! Good luck and be safe.

Jtraskell, you have confirmed what I already suspected. When I bought my '07 Tundra I was on the Tundra forum and guys were saying how they "ordered" their trucks. I seem to recall that not many got what the ordered. One of the simplest things to add was the rear view camera. They ended up with some aftermarket piece of junk. Still, it will be interesting to see what Toyota says.

Short answer: yes you can preference order. That's how I got mine. But it has to be something build-able, as was already mentioned.

And he's expect up to 6 weeks. Could be shorter though.

Short answer ; Iordered mine and got what I wanted.. Color, and interior, options etc. The dealer is BS'ing you.

Okki

Ryan S & Okki, Thanks. The only non-standard part of this order is the sliding cargo deck in an LE. I'm going to persue my local dealer with ammunition and hope they at least try to do something. They're the only dealer in Central Oregon. But, I don't mind driving a couple of hundred miles to get what I want. It'll be a couple of months yet but I'll post what Toyota says what I was able to get.

I preference ordered mine cause I wanted the most stripped out SR5 4x4 that I could get. I only have power seats and floor mats - but I was told no special orders from Japan, but my dealer worked they're tail off to get my business. You can look for my story on here, but I can't link it from my iPhone.

I have the sliding deck on mine.. I had to get mine from a dealer in cincy. Called the dealer before making the drive to make sure they understood my requirements. The was worth the 200 mile drive. They put in the order. Got mine in about 5 weeks.

OKKI

Every Limited I looked at had the cargo tray, which I did not want. They finally found one without in VA.

I guess this is my point. The OP CAN get the tray as it is already a listed "option" for an LE. Now the question becomes, will the local dealer and or distributer find a blue one with a tray, or willing to swap out the rear deck (of the correct interior color) to include a tray......

But this is not a special factory order. Nor will it ever be I guess.....I wish it could be done differently.

I was excited for the sliding tray but after having it for 1 yr in my TE, I would rather not have it....just an opinion but I bet you might finds others that felt the same way. When I want to use it, half my stuff falls off into the whole it creates when sliding out. The cargo net doesnt help, poor design, I would rather have a flat floor. I would not wait 6 weeks for this option but maybe for color and such.

That must be an east coast thing, I've been looking for a new/used 2010/2011 LE and ALL I can find is the 3rd row seat option which I don't want...except for one or two in white which I don't want

I agree - it is an interesting idea, but a bad design. If it extended all the way to the back of the cargo compartment, it would be much more useful. However, because it stops at the "hidden" storage compartment, any cargo items that are flush with the back seats will fall into the gap when you pull it out.

Our salesperson pointed out that it can also be used as a "picnic table" (it even has little hooks underneath to hang garbage bags). Of course to use this feature you have to unload all your cargo...

I have considered removing it to gain a little extra space (has anyone actually done this?), but I do occasionally need to transport large, heavy pieces of equipment that will fit on the tray, in which case it would probably be useful.

.

YES. I *think* it's been written up. Have you searched?

I also recall someone who removed it stating it uses up 6" or 8" (?) of cargo space.

Just wanted to put in my 2 cents as I actually got a call from my dealer this morning regarding the 2012 LE I ordered 3+ weeks ago.

Everything stated here has been my experience exactly - no "orders" only "prefs", 6 week waiting at a minimum, etc.) but I wasn't in a rush and decided to let the dealer find my car and hoped for the best.

Today, I got the call that he is having a tough time getting my exact request. He told me however, that one dealer got in a 4R exactly how I wanted it the only diff is that it has the 3rd row. He said that if I wanted the 3rd row, I could take that one and he would charge a minimal fee. (The other dealership called him to initiate a swap which is how he found the 4Runner)

My wife and I were just asking ourselves if we made a mistake by not getting the 3rd row, and then this deal came along, so we are going to take it.

I guess the long and short in terms of moral of the story is stick to your guns if you have time, and order what you want and you might get a nice bonus...

The problem my wife and I found with the third row is its like 8" higher than the normal backend - with us just having twins, like 5 days ago, I didn't want her to have to lift stuff any higher than the back bumper, she's only 110lbs and our stroller is almost 45lbs!
