Faulty Wheel Studs?

Anyone else here running into issues with loose or broken wheel studs when swapping tires? Shop installing my lift and tires says 3 of the studs free spin when tightened and 1 broke. Sounds like Toyota is using an impact gun out the gate...... now to see if I can get them fixed under warranty now that I have bigger tires on:ybrick:

But those three didn't spin freely when removing the lug? And wouldn't the broken one already be broken? Yep, blame the previous garage. Not even taking the tire swap into consideration this is unlikely to be covered under warranty. I wish you good luck on this.

I dealt with this right after doing my tires. Took it to Toyota who promptly fixed it for no cost to myself and politely informed me to not use an air gun. Use the battery powered or hand.

Previous shop was the toyota assembly line. The wheels have never been off. I have 3700 miles on my rig

Didn't you buy that truck from Stifler? I bet that Jackhole hit 'em with an impact wrench just to be funny. Yup.

nah I bought one that looked kinda like his form the same dealer... bet he is having the same issues!

wait.. so the fronts studs REALLY are shorter then the rear? why in the HAIL would they do that?

Are you questioning the engineering prowess of the o-mighty TOYOTA engineers? There is always a very logical explanation for their choices and if you have experienced any sort of problem it is always due to your ignorance or misuse. You can't question or improve perfection :jk::jk:

Back to reality, that does seem very odd. I have removed and reinstalled the wheels so many times I lost count, yet I have never noticed this. I'll have to check next time around. Seems like plenty of thread engagement for my wheels... Much of this would depend on wheel and lug nut design... I can see where the stock Toyota style lug nuts would lead to stretching... I go to 95 ft/lbs on traditional acorn style...

So they magically started spinning and failed when the shop TIGHTENED the lug nuts? Sounds like someone was rushing and may have been a bit overzealous with the impact.

You never know with Toyota engineers. I don't know if they still do it but the spark plugs on one half of the V6's in the FJ's (same engines as T4R's) were different from the 3 on the other side. Completely different, even manufacturer wasn't the same...

did you READ what I wrote? There was no impact wrench used. I was standing right there (friends shop) and with a HAND torgue wrench set to 80# it would click but still move. If anyone used an impact previous it was TOYOTA as the truck is 2 months old and the wheels havent ever been rotated.

I think it could be something as simple as some tire gloss or some other lubricant getting on the lug nuts. I would clean them thoroughly in something like simply green before re-install. Like mentioned in the other thread... That integrated washer can act like a bearing. The problem does not exist with non mag seat lug nuts (what most aftermarket wheels use).
