:wave:Hello again! I forgot how cool thins place is. Unfortunately, I come to you with a problem. I have a 2000 T4R with 4.10 gears. I think my rear third member is toast. I've searched online to find one, but am a little overwhelmed by the results. Could one of you fine folks suggest a place to go to get this? The housing itself has seen better days too. Maybe a whole new axle? Aftermarket perhaps? Not sure. I thought maybe there was a mysterious "Toyota-lord-of-parts" source I need to be aware of. Thanks for any help in getting that thing back on the road, I kinda miss it.
Finally, a problem w/ my Runner... Ideas?

You do not want to buy a complete third on line, especially from a Toyota parts source, unless you enjoy the sound of your wallet being violated by a rusty chainsaw with sadist tendencies.
You've got a couple realistic options, but your best option is to remove the third from your truck yourself (easy stuff, mechanically speaking) and take it to a reputable driveline shop to get checked out. They'll look the third over and confirm or deny your suspicion that it's toast, and if it is, they can rebuild it for you. That's what I would do. If you don't want to drop the third yourself you can take them the whole truck, but they'll charge you labor to drop and reinstall the third, driving the price up. Another option is a used third from a junkyard or classified ad - again, cheaper if you do the work yourself, and if you don't want to you'll have to look around to find a mechanic willing to do it for you. Most big shops won't. Buying a complete new third already setup with gears is an option, but it's the most expensive option and you'll still have to install it or have it installed. If you really want to go that route, check out eastcoastgearsupply.com and marlincrawler.com for an idea of prices (and don't forget to factor in shipping, those things are heavy).

My previous 4Runner (98) had the diff go bad before I got it. Their mechanic put in a Detroit TruTrac since it was no doubt cheaper than the factory diff. Depending on what's wrong with yours (is it the bearings, ring and pinion, spider gears?) you might go that route. If you are paying a shop to do it, you're probably looking at $700+ with labor (the diff is about $500). I'd recommend scouring junkyards and craigslist to find a complete rear end to swap. 4.10 is a pretty common gear for these.

Different gear ratios. The 2wd third will fit, physically, but the gear ratio won't match the front.

Count the teeth on the ring and pinion gears and do the math, just to be safe.
