I put down Black Bear Pass (Photography) for Thursday. I am travelling with another guy, (callsign Potatolauncher from FJ Cruiser forum). We are going to arrive Ouray on the 17th probably around 2PM and may drive around a little that afternoon. We may also be whipped and ready for a break from driving as well. In any case I am planning to do something on Wednesday since the only scheduled runs are on Thurs, Fri, and Sat. I have to leave really early on Friday morning to make it to Colorado Springs by 2PM. So I will only get the off-road pleasure of Medano Pass, wahtever I do Wednesday, Which may very well be the Alpine Loop, and then I scheduled Black Bear on Thursday. I BB is closed, I dont know what I will do. I will prolly wait and see what the other 4Runners are doing and pal around with all you guys. If anyone wants to meet east of the Rockies and join me and Casey (Potatolauncher) you are welcome to do so. It will be a really cool warm up to the Summit Trails. PM me if interested.

I checked-out the Black Bear Pass and it doesn't look as bad as it's "difficult" moniker. There was a picture of a completely stock Jeep Cherokee running the trail, so I switched my Friday trail run over to running Black Bear with Joneseyyy at 8 am.

Difficult. Most of the trail is easy to moderate. The difficult rating is based on a mile-long stretch of dangerous switchbacks above Bridal Veil Falls. Your vehicle should have low-range 4WD, good tires, good brakes, excellent articulation, and a fully functional emergency brake. Understand the apprehension, my good buddy has run it in FJ40s and Jeeps and said it is scary...but just requires patience and multiple point turns to do it safely.

I have been making an annual trek to Ouray for almost 10 years now and will be arriving on the 22nd for this year's annual week of fun. We will be staying at the Ouray KOA the 22nd - 28th. I'm new to this forum and new to 4Runner ownership. If anyone staying at the KOA is still around Sunday afternoon we should be pulling in around 3:00 PM.

We ran Black Bear last year in a slightly modified Tacoma without any issues. The most difficult part is the "steps" section just above the switchbacks into Telluride, which is the photo by Okki. It is steep and slick, but once onto the switch backs you need a tight turning radius. Even the shortest wheelbase vehicles will have to make three point turns on most of them. There are several trails in the San Juans much rougher than Black Bear, but none have the pucker factor like Black Bear.
