Does anyone know if the IC 165TOY 6.5" will fit in the rear doors on a 2011 SR5 non nav, non JBL ? From everything I have read here it looks like it will, but is there a difference with the older 4runner vs 16's and 17's ? I can't seem to find an answer and Crutchfield is saying it won't fit.

They should. Although I probably wouldn't bother. I replaced just the fronts on my 17 and they sound drastically better.

I haven’t updated since install... but i did the front doors and dash speakers a few months ago. Difference is day and night. Stock speakers are flat and compressed. Focals are crisp and much clearer. If you are trying to REALLY enhance the sound, you’ll want to do an amp as well. But I did not; and 95% of the time, I am very satisfied with the output/sound. I’m a bit older, so it may matter (more) to some of the younger guys. But again, vast improvement in sound quality/performance for 100% plug and play.
For what it’s worth, while we had the panels off, I threw some sound deadening around the speakers as well. Don’t know if that made a huge difference, but I suspect it added a tad of deepness in there.

FYI your not gonna get the full use out of these or any good component set without extra power. get a pair of focal 6x5s for the rear doors and a 4channel amp and welcome to good clean sound. add another amp and a sub and now you have complete sound. at this point disconnect the hatch speakers they aren't necessary
Can you just disconnect the hatch speakers without it effecting the door speakers? ...I was under the impression that if you disconnect the hatch speakers the rear door speakers won't work?
I would like to keep the factory head unit in my Trail premium Gen5 and add the IS690TOY to the fronts and add the IC650TOY to the rear doors and disconnect the rear hatch completely as they are not really necessary and then -in theory perhaps- the factory amp won't work as hard and can better drive the front & rear door speakers?

I would like to thank anyone and everyone who had a good thing to say about Focal speakers. For the past year I've told myself I'd soon get used to the rotten, muddy sounds coming out of my 4Runner. HA !!
So yesterday I left my 4Runner at a local audio shop and now I'm so happy I can't stand it. Why did I wait? I'm 67 and not getting any younger. :frog:
They installed the Focal IS690TOY in front and Focal AC165 Access in the rear doors. I told them I keep the rear seats down most of the time hauling stuff around and that's what they recommended. Didn't bother with the hatch. I tried to spend more, but followed their suggestions and even they were pleased - and surprised - at how well it turned out.
They used 36 sq.ft. of Hushmat - two layers in each front door & just one on the metal in the rear doors.
The labor was $440 and the total of everything including state tax was $1192.
That's the best $1200 I've spent since I bought my girlfriend a pair of Marco Bicego earrings for her birthday last year.

I'll say this about the JBL systems. For 3 years I drove an '06 Avalon XLS with factory JBL and 12? speakers that my father bought and I enjoyed it a lot. I spent a lot of time in that car running up and down the Interstate to get them settled in the retirement home, etc.
I bought a new '10 Highlander Limited and drove it until 11/16. It too had factory JBL with 9 speakers and it was great.
I'll take what I now have anytime over a Toyota JBL system. The JBL is fine, this one suits me better.

Rear Door Speakers Wet
Anyone having issues with the Focal 165's in the rear doors? I have replaced them twice now because the coils have failed and they started popping. Crutchfield has been great about it.
Yesterday when I installed the second set of replacements, I noticed both rear speakers were wet. The snow was melting and running down through the door sills which is normal, but could the moisture be causing the coils to fail? Considering a baffle with the bottom cut out to create a roof over the speaker.
First time I installed the replacements, I noticed fresh snow that must have blown up in through the drains at the bottom of the doors.

My guess is that the drains are plugged and the moisture and condensation inside the door is freezing and "appears" to be snow. Rust/mud/leaves can easily plug the tiny drains.
I just bought a very similar set of speakers...
I bought the Power Bass Toyota speakers for my 2018 4R. It was a smokin deal on Ebay. $75 Brand new delivered to my house.
I only replaced the front 6x9 and the tweeters.
Wow, what a difference. If a salesman would have told me that I would be this impressed with a set of $75 speakers, I would have called BS...
These speakers truly made a huge difference.
They were not 100% plug and play. The screw holes on the speakers did not line up exactly, but a Sharpie, and drill fixed that in 20 seconds... The kit came with the tweeter adaptor plates, and all the necessary wiring plugs.
My son and I just completed the replacement, honestly it only took us and hour.
Now I am searching for good deals for replacing the rear doors and hatch speakers.
It truly woke that system up. When you see the crappy quality of the factory speakers, you will fully understand. I do not think the factory 6x9s weighed 6 oz's. The Power Bass 6x9 had huge magnets, weighed a couple lbs each...
This is a must upgrade to your factory stereos. Just do it.

Drains aren't plugged, vehicle is only three months old. But. I can get behind the theory that they are freezing as they have seemed to fail when we have had temps dipping to below zero. Plan on matting the doors, will add some baffles to protect them while I am in there.

I used the noico sound deadening mat and foam from amazon. One layer of mat on doorskins all 4 doors and one layer of foam over inner door frame behind door panel. Then installed the is690 toy in front doors and dash and the ic165 toy in rear doors and hatch. These made an unbelievable difference. Solid mid bass and crisp highs...finally! I have ordered the taco tunes amp harnesses and underseat mounting plate along with a jl audio xd700/5 v2 amp and audison bit ten processor. The plan is to wire the rear doors and hatch parallel rather than in series(toyota...why did you do this?) so they should see 50 watts per speaker and 75 watts per front speaker component set. Subwoofer to follow. My guess is that the rears are lucky if theyre getting 5 watts per speaker from the factory head unit power.
Anyone on the fence with the focals???.... you wont be disappointed. I ordered from mazzone hi fi on ebay and they shipped from Italy. It took a week to get here but was worth the savings over crutchfield pricing.

Which 165s do you have? Ic165 toy or is165? Or??
The ic165 toy has a shield around it like the factory set to shed water. I had bought the boom mat foam surrounds but didnt install since the soeaker looked like it would handle moisture on its own.
Put the ic165Toy in the rear doors and just 6.5" Focals in the rear gate. So rear doors had the shields built in, but the magnets were very damp when I pulled them out, not sure how much protection they offer. When I replaced the speaker that failed the first time, I did not replace both, only the bad one. Then when the other failed, Crutchfield thought the pair had just been damaged while shipping or that they were both defective. So the second time I swapped both.
I matted the doors and added a flat section between the inner and outer skin of sheet metal to divert the water away from the speaker. The boom mats did not fit over the speakers.
Just installed a JL JX/400 amp, LC7i and combined with the dynamat, these speakers really came to life! Without the power these speakers crave, the low-mids and bass were blending and muddy.
As for the tweeter brackets, I hit them with some plastidip to be less reflective, was driving me crazy too. Use something with a matte finish.

I mistakenly ordered the IC690TOY instead of the IS690TOY, for my front doors.
Are they identical, minus the tweeters? Will the IC690TOY fit in the front, or just the rear doors and hatch?
Need to know ASAP if I need to amend my order.

The ic690 is a 6x9 and will not fir rear doors or hatch. It is a coaxal speaker and will fit the front doors however the tweeter is built into it rather than separatey like the is690. The is690 is a xomponent speaker with separate tweeter that mounts in dash locations with 6x9 woofer in the door. Id change the order to is690. They will make an amazing improvement. If you use the ic680 and leave the stock tweeter I doubt you will be very impressed.
