for those with 255's

im looking to upgrade the rubber, and think that 255/75 or 255/80 is the best of both worlds for me when it comes to on road manners/mpg and capability offroad. my only concern is that the pizza cutter look wont seem right, so for those of you who do run them, how do you feel they stack up in appearance compared to the likes of 265/70, 285/70, for overall appearance?

I have BFG MT KM 255/75/17 and I love this size.

This is the maximum size you can go without any rubbing. I get very very close to rubbing at full flex but it does not rub at all. If you go with 255/80/17 you definitely will rub and will probably need an aftermarket bumper to clear them and cut and remove your rear bumper mud flaps.

Last month I came back from a 2,000 mile road trip from Southern California to Moab, Ut and tires did great. Went on many trails that people were running 35's on and my 4runner never broke a sweat!

I've ran stock 265/65, then 255/75, and now 285/70. I love the wider tire, but that's personal preference. The narrower tire did do better on road. In terms of height, it's easy to get caught up in the numbers, the height difference isn't near as noticeable (IMO) as the width. I'll try to dig up some pics of the full rig to use for comparison.

Here's a 255/75 compared to the 285/70.

Thats what I'm also looking to run when I replace my tires. I know alot of folks aren't too keen on the look but I love it plus it's functional for my needs.

I'll also mention that if you want to go with something wider than the 255, consider the 275/70/17. It's the same height of the 255/75 but wider. There aren't many options in this size, but a great middle of the road size. Soon as I can sell my current tires/wheels I'll be going with the 275's.

Not the best pics, but best I could find with roughly the same lift height and same angle.

thats exactly what i needed to see! only concern i have is that i do run spidertrax and have read because i do search that people have encountered rubbing, albeit not as severe as the 285s

I ran the 255's pictured with spidertrax. Before spacers I only had to move the front fender liner forward. After the spacers I had to remove the front mud flaps (possibly could have trimmed them instead of completely removing), but no other trimming. With the 285's I have had to do a lot more trimming on both the bumper and behind where the mud flaps use to be.

Man these look perfect actually.. Gonna have to really consider these...

Thanks....I'm actually selling these tires/wheels, just haven't officially posted them yet. Not sure what part of Texas you're in, but possibly close enough to make a deal. PM me your location if you're interested and maybe we can work something out.

The 255's got a little better MPG, but the 285's didn't make as big of an impact as I expected. 100% city I'll get 14, but 100% highway I can squeeze out 20+.

when running the 255's what size lift did you have with the spacers? im about to lift 2 inches and thinking about spidertrax as well if i dont rub

When I first put them on, 1.5" lift in the front with stock rear. I eventually lifted more, but because I wanted to, not because I needed more height for the 255s.
