Like one of the other Mods mentioned, under the current ownership, this site is about ad delivery (and we are the product they sell to advertisers). Toyota content just happens to be what gets our eyeballs on these pages. The number of ad-related interfaces this site uses is pretty extensive Scroll down to Advertising.

Ok.. Will the current ownership ever sale this? I guess we could dream (less ads). As the Ad-related interfaces is insane.

I would just imagine that if the content manager and other plugins are extremely old, the forum will get compromised easier and not function again. So their wont be able to show ads if the forum goes offline because hacks/ etc. I would think they wouldn't want that either. I guess its a tough balance.

You make a good point. Anything beats looking for the right Chilton in a library.

Oh yes you 2 are correct. I remember those days of FSM only. Spent many of years with only those. Forums are a lot better.

Chilton was the holy grail 3" thick hardcover you a wana be not having one.
Ford in dads our garage nearly disowned going to engine with distributor at firewall,
Dodge next house over, GM 3 houses down across street GM guy's brother owned Kawasaki shop,
Uncle Rambler/Nash dealer mechanic. Old school networking, I was spoiled.
Net is a good thing in all aspects, Except for my euro trash Audi where you need software and cable for some things,
haven't found a work around for that $600 expense just to reset battery and service reminders.

Regarding ads, just install uBlock Origin extension and no more intrusive ads. Ads are dangerous and are commonly compromised to deliver unwanted guests.

same here. was able to access the forum only yesterday. but I looked at the new posts and there were few dated as 11 July 2024 so I thought it was only me but the error message was about VB or something. not an IT guy here so I don't know what that means

Keep in mind that the last time the site went down it was characterized as a targeted DDoS attack. Someone is likely still trying to disrupt this site. Maybe current ownership has enemies or are the target of a bored teenager - who knows?

And maybe they are deliberately running software that hasn't been supported in 8 years, leaving it prone to attack, doesn't even respond to communication by vhis own staff, and doesn't give a spit as long as the ads get paid?

Even though they have actually made hosting and security (Cloudflare, etc) changes, I think you're correct that the owners don't care all that much as long as (some of us) are still seeing ads. That was confirmed by a mod who checked in a while back. They def don't give a rat's ass about 4Runners.

I think it's worthwhile sticking around. A wealth of knowledge to be had on here and it's a good group of people. Every forum will have a few bad apples that like to argue but I can't say I've seen much of that here on T4R.

Sort of related but kinda not, I joined a Honda forum since I have a newly acquired Accord. Things are cool over there but there are definitely some d-bags, and I'm not quite sure why. At this point I'm contemplating deleting my profile on the Accord forum because of it. I don't want to be a part of a community that is rude. There's a few over there that I can think of, not all, so please don't take that as a generalized statement.

Nonetheless, there's no place like home here on T4R, in my opinion. I hope that this forum will remain up and running for years to come and hopeful that there could even be a major update to the platform!
