FOUND: Missing nut; where does it go?

Get your mind out of the gutter.



Took my skid plate off for an oilf change and found a 21 mm nut banging around. I laid on my back for a half an hour looking around for where it goes to no avail.

For those of you fellow wrenchers -- off the top your head can you think of any places a 21 millimeter nut goes? Even a list of known locations would help.

You know what they say. "you know you did a good job when you have left over parts and you have no idea where they came from or what the hell they go to". I am surprised my runner hasn't fallen apart yet based on the extra nuts and bolts I find after completing a job.
 
Really, the only 21mm nuts are the lug nuts.

IIRC, the UCA bolt and but is 19mm, the UBJ nut is 22 or 24mm, and nothing else is that big.

Again, IIRC. Could be leaving something out.
 
OH MAN! I hate it when i find stuff like that...i got nothing for you man. The perfectionist in me would go crazy.
 
Not quite sure but,

Seeing that it's a "Lock-nut", it may just be an old 'strut shaft' nut from a shock absorber replacement that was done at some point. Those (center) tower shaft nuts are pretty large. The new struts come w/ new lock-nuts so the old ones just end up down in the frame or skid plates when you spin them off using an air gun; I used to change a lot of front-end parts when I worked @ GdYr service dept as a kid. "See if it fits..."

That's a good guess and I was jumping on the bandwagon with you until I remembered the size. 21mm seems large for a strut nut doesn't it? I'd still take a look to be sure.

To the OP,
Did you happen to get new nuts for your Upper control arm through bolts?
 
If it is not the UCA, possibly something from the steering rack? On mine there is one bolt/nut that is vertical. I don't remember the size though.

Im with you, 21 seems too large for a shock nut.

Light racing includes a new bolt/nut/washers with their UCAs. I'm guessing that's what it is. I have to get boxes down and check my "leftovers" to do a count.

That was my other thought. I poked around and couldn't find a thread for it on the rack.

Seems too large for anything other than the UCA.

Yessir. I'd actually gone wheeling a few times before I found it. Didn't recall hearing it. And my rig doesn't seem to have any unusual characteristics except a tired steering rack. Hmmm....
 
I don't think Toyota used any lock nuts as big as a 21mm... Most of the OEM stuff uses loctite, not lock nuts.

You might have just picked it up on the road.

Nothing personal towards any of the post owners on this thread, but that is NOT a 21 mm nut. Nuts and bolts are identified by the "thread" size, followed by the thread pitch(example- 12mm 1.5), not the wrench size.

Very possible it was a random nut that somehow found its way there. 21mm is bigger than any nuts I've dealt with in the engine bay on mine, but I haven't really done anything involved so I can't rule it out with personal experience, but more knowledgeable minds here seem to agree it's too large. It's also possible that a previous owner/mechanic was trying to do something and dropped it there, ie: they were trying to replace a lost factory nut and tried several for fit, and misplaced this one. A lot of random stuff seems to find its way into skid plates. I had a Z71 before, and once found a 0.50BMG casing on the skid... anyone familiar with the tank trails and K ranges at Camp Lejeune will likely understand lol.
 
When I changed my rack, there was a large locking nut about that size but I cannot remember if it was the large bolt about 8" long that went horizontal through the steering rack closer to the driver's side of the rack or the shorter bolt that went vertical closer to the centre of the rack.

Unfortunately, I cannot remember the size.
Take a look though and make sure you have both those nuts already on your rack.
One was definitely a locking nut on mine.

Yeah yeah, we know. It's alot easier to refer to the socket size though, since that is very easy to measure, and is in fact what the OP referred to. And in all fairness, my comment is valid for what I said, I don't think that Toyota used a nut that "is to be engaged by a 21mm socket" (see how stupid that sounds, that's how you sound :blah:) that was a lock nut.

And just to fend off the misunderstanding, the smilies mean that was lighthearted ribbing, not me calling you a pedantic douche.

Although... :jk:
