Front and Rear Diff fluid change

running redline 75w85 in the rear diff for about 5k miles and planning to use redline mt-lv in the near future in the transfer case.

As for front diff, when the time comes, i'll just use whatever 75w90 i have laying around. I dont use 4wd enough to justify new fluid purchase.

Yes but thanks to ADD, the front diff is always partially spinning an axle. Just something to keep in mind.
 
Well, there's the manual, with the mfr. spec, so it's not exactly "no reason."

Earlier on this thread, some people noted their dealers don't stock the specified grade. Suggesting the dealers aren't using it when they service diffs. Which wouldn't surprise me, given my life experience with various dealers.

Given all the 4Runners on the road (not to mention other Toyotas that might "require" that same grade), it's odd hardly anyone other than Toyota sells it.
 
Red Line makes a 75W-85 GL-5 gear oil. They also make a compatible gear oil for the transfer case. Both are much more affordable than the OEM oil.

This brings up another question: Why is Toyota specifying a GL-5 gear oil for my diff, when AFAIK my diffs aren't LS? :confused:
 
GL-5 has nothing to do with limited slip or no. It's rated for it's EP (Extreme Pressure) properties. You can get GL-5 oil with or without the friction modifiers required by a clutch-type limited slip unit. They specify EP oil to withstand the shearing forces of the helical gears in the differential.

OK, but the Redline oil recommended earlier includes the friction modifiers. I'm looking at the specs on the Redline website. :ohwell:

But I now see Summit Racing sells MOPAR and AC Delco 75W85 GL-5 synthetic with no additives. Maybe one of those is the ticket. I think I'll avoid the MOPAR...it might turn my Toyota into a lemon like my Wrangler was. :laugh:

I was surprised to hear of dealers not using the spec'd material.
 
Summit's data is wrong on the ACDelco at least. GM specifically recommends that stuff for "ZF" (clutch) type diffs. It doesn't matter - the friction modifiers don't hurt an open diff at all. They just help a clutch type LS stay quiet. That's why almost all GL5 gear oils have them - it makes it universal. Most gear oil without LS modifiers is actually sold for LS differentials - for folks that want to tune their diff with just enough friction modifier to keep it from chattering. That way it locks up stronger. Most of the rest is sold for manual transmissions with iffy syncros - LS friction modifiers make it too slippery for the syncros to get a good bite.

Buy whatever makes you feel good though. It's just gear oil for a dead reliable unit. As long as its GL5 it'll be fine. This gets way over thought.

I finally did my rear diff recently. Easy enough to do with the vehicle sitting on the garage floor, there's plenty of room once the spare is removed.

I didn't need PB blast or anything other than a long breaker bar to get the plugs out. Especially the fill plug. But I live in the Southwest so no winter driving and salt/rust issues. :thumb:

At 30K, there was just a small blob of sludge on the plug magnet.

I still need to get around to doing the xfr case and front diff. First I need to find a better pump! The pump I bought wouldn't fit the Valvoline bottles I had for the rear diff! Any recommendations on a good pump/oil bottle combo? :)
 
Wish I had a good answer. I cleaned out another oil bottle that fit my pump but it’s still a slippery mess. I’ve got a squeeze bottle of Delvac 1 for the next change but I’m not sure it’ll fit with the spare in the way.

i was able to do rear diff, and atf with just a funnel and a long 1/2" vinyl hose attached to it.. i just kept the funnel high up and taped to anything i can come up with and let gravity do the rest

i havent done the t/c or front diff but i cant imagine i'd need pumps at all
 
I ended up getting a one gallon sprayer at Home Depot this morning for $10. You don’t need to modify it at all to use as a fluid pump, just remove the spray nozzle for faster delivery. You can either clamp the hose or turn the relief valve to stop pumping. I replaced the black heavy duty tubing with 6ft of 1/4”ID 3/8”OD clear. Testing with water it pumped a liter in less than 30 seconds with 10 pumps.

I'm curious to see how well it pumps thick gear oil. I feel like it's going to take quite a while but you never know.
 
I added a 3/8” ball valve and tested my oil pump today with 2 qts of Delvac 75w-90. First I pumped the tank 30 times then another 10 halfway through. Took a little over 3 mins to transfer the oil back into its container. Only a few oz get leftover in the tank. I plan to use this pump only for gear oil so I left it in there. This thing gonna work great for the diffs and transfer case.
Next I’m gonna figure out how to turn one into a power brake bleeder.

Yeah I’m actually planning on doing brake fluid very soon. TechStream isn’t needed, the brakes pump when the rear bleeders are open and the pedal is depressed Most likely going to do the rears that way and gravity bleed the fronts. No rush.
There are instructions to bleed the ABS using TechStream. I need to read up.

Actually a Lifelong Conservative and born in California when it was conservative. Now have two homes in California and a ranch in Montana, so definitely not a liberal.

So we can have people who live in fear and only use Toyota OEM fluids, or we can have those like myself who studied up on the issue and use aftermarket fluids to great success. Which one is right? Well, we’re at 246K miles on a 2014 SR5 purchased new in September. All on aftermarket fluids after changing out the OEM fluids. Aside from balancing issues on the last set of Cooper tires, this is the tightest running 250k mile car we’ve ever had. I have no doubt it will easily blow past 300K and we’re probably looking at a 500K mile truck.
