Front and Rear Diff fluid change

Alright, put Mobil 75w90 LS in front and rear differentials and Mobile Delvac 75w90 in transfer case. Had some 120K miles since the prior change. All fluids were clear and only slightly darker than the new. Garden sprayer pump set-up worked fine, but slow in the 34 F temp. I used 1/4 ID by 3/8 OD hose, but it took heating the ends in boiling water to get them onto the 3/8" ball valve. The picture in the post above looks like 3/8" ID hose.

Update here: also changed/flushed transmission fluid twice on the truck, using Valvoline Synthetic and the Home Depot sprayer to pump it in. Before flushing I idled the truck for 20 minutes to get it to temp and replaced what I took out. Got the fill set with a bit of dribble coming out. Truck now has 284K miles on it and runs great. Never have used OEM lubricants. I am sure that voided my warranty.

Other than Toyota and Ravenol, I just found one more brand that makes 75w-85.

It's called Febi from the Bilstein Group and is made in Germany.

started looking into the diff change front and rear and the transfer case. All seem very simple as long as you can get the fill plug off.

For the diffs I'm considering

Red Line 50105 75W85 GL-5 Gear Oil, 1 Gallon about $79, one place has it at $59 but not available.
Will need 5 qts

*redline 75/95 seems to be an option as well from reading various forums

75W-85 Is what manual calls for. I tried 75W-90 Royal Purple and wasn't pleased with the way it worked so I switched to Redline 75w-85 in both diffs, and OEM 75W in transfer case. Now it drives as smooth as silk:

plan on using the same , currently at 56k miles

Directionally, the 70w does not meet the minimum viscosity when cold.

I doubt if any oil companies know the exact ingredients and manufacturing process of the Toyota 75W.

You could go to any oil product company and they say, we don't know exactly what it is as Toyota has not released information about it.

That being said, any decent oil should work and nothing will explode. But there is a difference between "should work/works" and "works optimally as designed".

So it all boils down to which you prefer for the price.

I will bet money if you go to the Toyota dealer for diff and TC service they fill all of them from the bulk 75W80 in the back.

One of the many reasons to never go to a dealer for anything unless you have absolutely no choice.

Did the rear differential this evening took maybe 30 minutes start to finish. Dropped the spare tire and used a pump.

Plan on doing the front tomorrow, space is pretty tight underneath the suv. Can i use ramps for front only ? Or should i Jack it up and use stands , drain it , lower it and fill?

Drop the skid plate and remove it completely. Plenty of room to work under there.

Well 2/3 are completed, the front differential drain plug stripped some and i didn’t want to mess it up completely. The fill plug came off with some force.


Rear differential and transfer case were easy, having a pump helps out tremendously.

My local NAPA dealer told me NOT to use the synthetic Valvoline 75W90 in my diffs if the original oil is not synthetic. I am at 32000 miles on my 19 TRD OR with the OEM filled oil & want to change both front & rear diff oil.

Is the NAPA guy full of cukka or does he have a valid point ?

In other words, is it safe to replace the original diff oil with synthetic ?

Years ago when I did my 2010 4R diffs & transfer case I only used the genuine Toyota oils but I was hoping to get away from the expensive "liquid gold" stuff.

I've never heard of the factory fill not being synthetic; Napa guy is a moron. I wouldn't even know where to get a Non-synthetic gear oil in 2022. You wont have any problems running that Valvoline in your Diff's.

Thanks, I'm probably going to use the Valvoline 75W 90 synthetic.

Believe it or not, NAPA did have NON-synthetic gear oil on the shelf.
