Front books torn-Not CV

I was under the truck this morning and noticed that a set of boots were old and torn. All the fluid looks like it all leaked out. I know what the CV boots look like these weren't them. These were below and behind the CV boots. I'm no mechanic but I think they covered joints connected to the steering rack. Looks like a bunch of rust was there so they must of been ripped for a while. My truck has over 321K on it and the rack was never changed. How critical are these boots and what kinda damage am I doing the longer I wait. I live in the northeast where road salt is a big problem. Is this something I should attempt myself(with no lift) or take it to a shop. Everybody's advice has been great in the past but I'm at a loss on this one. Thanks

From what I understand, your talking about your tie rod boots. Those hold fluid/grease, yes. I can't stress enough how important those are. If it's been bootless for a long time like your saying, I'd definitely get them replaced ASAP. Theirs ball joints in there and again, if they've been like that for a long time they can separate themselves from the steering rack, resulting in loss of steering on that wheel, all together. Definitely get this fixed my friend.

Those steering rack boots protect where the inner tie rods connect to the steering rack. They do not hold any fluid or grease, however may contain a little from either a leaking rack/pinion assembly or from water mixing with the ITR grease.

The boots should definitely be replaced. If all your other parts are stock, it is probably worth your money and time to replace the ITR, OTR, and lower ball joints at the same time. Search the forum for symptoms of failing parts, but at 321k miles, it is good maintenance.

Replacing these isn't too bad if your are decent with tools. There are write ups for all on this forum. If your entire rack/pinion needs replacing, that is another animal. Because you are in a rusty area, it may just be worth it to pay someone for the labor. Or at least find a buddy who has done this before.

got a picture, because i just went under my truck to check the sloppy steering and i noticed one boot has a little grease. I was just given new/used inner tie rods off a 98 taco. I am not sure if they are compatible, anyone know for sure on this? one is a oem and one is a moog, odd i know. i just purchased new steering rack bushings but i live in the UP of michigan so i am waiting for warmer days!
