ugh, at my wit's end here. have a 2010 4runner with 50k on it. put some new Cooper AT3's and got a front end alignment and then had some front end vibration at highway speeds. went back to Mavis (tire shop) and they re-balanced the tires and it went away. a week goes by and the vibration starts again, back in to shop for another re-balancing. felt great for a week and now back to vibrating again. anyone have any issues with these tires? what else could it be? thanks!

Maybe the lead weights are coming off? make sure they clean the spot on the wheel before applyng the weight? I believe most weights are stick on now!!!
Yes, I have issues with these tires. I have the Cooper AT3's in an LT 265/70/17 (Load Range C) mounted on 8" wide wheels. They MUST be balanced on a RoadForce balancer. Even after words, I still get a slight front-end shimmy. I do like the tread design, handling, and off-road capability of these tires, but the balance issue is just not acceptable. I won't be buying any more Cooper tires when these wear out. I now have 14000 miles on them, and they are wearing well, but I will be choosing another brand of 6-ply tire after the AT3's expire.
I have a 12 Ltd and about 3 weeks ago got new wheels and tires. Wheels are 20x9 Black Rhino Sabi and Tires are 275/55/R20 Michelin LTX MS2. During city driving under 50 mph I get no vibration at all. But everytime I go on Hwy above 65 mph - I get severe vibration. Don't know if its a tire balancing or wheel alignment issue. The truck is 3 mths old with 3k miles now and was bought brand new.
Since the new wheels have an angled lug slot the original lug nuts do not fit and Discount Tire installed their angled grove lug nuts. These are very small and light compared to the OEM lug nuts. But they say these are strong and are the right ones for the job. I don't know what to do. Please advice.

Have them re-balanced on a Road Force machine and you might also have your alignment re-checked.
OEM wheels are hub centric, most aftermarket wheels including the Black Rhino Sabi are lug centric and thus the reason for the conical lug nuts which center the wheel. It's doubtful that the lug nuts have anything to do with the vibration and most likely it's due to improper balance or misalignment. As above have them rebalanced on a Road Force machine and you might also have your alignment checked.

Ok...I'm having fits with my cooper at3's (275/55/20) too... Above 50 and I get minor to mild vibration...My local tire guy has balanced them twice for me...I stood and watched him the whole time...machine shows balanced...I start driving and above 50 the vibration starts...I'm not sure if i should just visit my stealership or what to have this problem fixed...I just came back from a road trip and this got annoying... thoughts...what about those balance beads...thoughts
Look up a shop near you that has the latest hunter road force balancing machine. Get them roadforced. Simple dynamic balancing will not work to get the wheels glass smooth assuming your wheels and tires aren't materially defective.
I found my shop on the hunter site, yelped them and all is great again.

really? you have a set of these coopers and a hunter road force balancing fixed it? or you saying this in general. if this is a general statement, then i would need to disagree with you. from experience.

Are coopers problematic to balance, or do we just need to use a road force machine to balance whatever tire is on our hub centric wheels?

Usually a bad fit on the centering cone. Next time, do the spin balance, then rotate the wheel 180 on the machine and spin it again.

I had the same issue with General Tires too, I ordered tires online and had them shipped to a local tire dealer listed on their installer list.
Speeds above 60mph shook like crazy, took them back for re-balance. They were better but still shook too much.
Finally took it to the local Toyota dealer and had them use their road force balancer, lots better. Still not as smooth as the original tires were, but I can live with it now.
I had just decided to stay with highway all season tires since I do not really drive off road very often and my Runner is mainly used as a work vehicle.
I am disappointed with my choice of General Grabber HTS tires, due mostly to the balance issue but also I have lost about 1 mpg in mileage since I put them on. They were a reasonable price but I wish I had just got another set of the OEM Bridgestone tires.

The dealer seems to think that the Kevlar in the Wranglers was causing the balancing problem. In addition, the Wranglers were 10 lbs heavier per tire on aluminun rims than my spare(on a steel rim), which cut my average gasoline milage by 3 mpg. The dealer switched them out for Firestone Destination ATs. So far I have had no vibration problems with the Firestones and hopefully my milage will improve with the lighter tires.

Update: I went and had my tires balanced again...this time seems to have solve the problem... I think these 20" AT tires just take more effort to balance... I still have a little vibration but I think I need to get new brakes and my rotors turned(shake when braking)... I much happier with this balance. This was just a standard balance machine. I'll work on changing my brakes soon and report back.
I also called the manufacture and they said if I can't get them balance then to have the tires returned under warranty as they may be bad.

Update to my update:
After a number of balancing and rotation(from to back) efforts, what seems to have worked the best so far is doing a X-rotation. Things have been much smoother...much better than any other efforts.
I've been hibernating for those who miss me.:wink2:
