Front left wheel bearing...toast at 63,000mi

no more so that heavy tire and/or wheels with increased backspacing.... added stress? sure... is it going to go boom as the nazis elude? no... where are all these clowns at every time someone throws a new set of wheels and tires on.... but I would be more than happy to see a study over a 10 year period claiming wheel spacers caused premature failure lol..... I need some light reading for the crapper

I wouldn't worry about it to much...

Catastrophic failure could happen at any time for a number of reasons. So not putting the spacer on won't promise longer life, but using one MAY shorten it a little. Beyond that my guess is that most will have moved on to their next vehicle by the time it would need replacing.

But we don't really know that for certain do we? It's undeniable that lots of mods we do add extra stress to all sorts of parts on the vehicle. However, which one would break what faster (and by how much) is the real question here, and at this point I think we're all just speculating to a certain extent.

I mean don't get me wrong, it's certainly not going to stop me from running heavier tires (which I am) or lower offset wheels (which I would if someone buys me some )

Mine is shot too at ~65k miles. Interesting trend. How hard is this to replace? Can someone with a socket set do it or will I need some kind of special bearing press?

I'm not running spacers. Only thing non-stock I can think of that would have any impact are my 285/70/17 duratrac tires. However, I wouldn't think that would be a significant factor.

My front left bearing is also toast, at 38K miles. Mine has an excuse, as I dropped that wheel into a sinkhole at high speed that ripped out the entire suspension, taco'd the wheel, and split the tire in the process.

Ordered a new wheel bearing from http://bluepitbearings.com. They sell the bearing and hub as a complete assembly providing an easy bolt on solution vs. having to deal with pulling/pressing a new bearing on to the existing hub.

Uh oh, I went through a foot of water last weekend that splashed my truck good~ under, over etc and for the past few days I've been thinking I have *have* to be imagining that whrirring sound from my front left wheel. Just short of 54,000 miles, bone stock.

What exactly can water do to the bearings to make them crap out, and is there a way to clean them or whatnot before they're unrecoverable?

Water can wash out the grease and cause a sealed bearing to fail, but not a foot of water. Think several feet of water, all the time, to maybe cause a problem.

Finally got to get mine in for the dealer to check out~

Turns out it was my front *left* not right bearing that was bad, despite what all of our ears told us.

They replaced it at no cost and WOW what a difference! I forgot how quite this ride really is~

Sometimes a bad wheel bearing can't be detected by wiggling or rotating the wheel by hand.

Try paying attention to what happens to the noise/vibration during a turn. If you have a bad left wheel bearing, it will often make more noise during a right hand turn (more load on bearing) and get quiet during a left hand turn (less load).

you are correct, i had no play.. but had a slight humming up front and a little vibration in the steering wheel.. and after replacing both front wheel bearings both of those are gone now
