Front License Plate Issue

So, I recently moved to Virginia and had to put the dreaded front license plate on......Of course, I didn't want to drill two large holes in the front bumper, and there is no OEM bracket for the 5th gen....After some research I found this website, purchased and installed. Its works like a charm, and i've only got two tiny holes up underneath the front bumper that won't be seen if I ever sell or move to a state that doesn't require the front plate.

Looks like a good thing. They don't list the 4Runner, so what size did you got?

I wanted to put a decorative plate on the front so I could find my vehicle in parking lots among thousands of other similar looking ones so I just drilled 4 tiny holes and mounted it with sheet metal screws. Didn't have to buy anything.

Here's another thread on license plate mounting with pics of how the Skene mounts . I had one on my M3 and had it on my 4Runner for awhile. They are a good design but expensive.http://www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/59351-front-license-bracket.html#post490557

You really can't find a 5th Gen 4Runner in a parking lot? They are pretty unique and are pretty tall and easy to spot ,unlike a Camry! The OP ,like me, doesn't want to put holes in his bumper if he doesn't have to.

Or you can go to your local hardware store, get 2 90 degree galvanized brackets and be done for a lot less money! I did that with the wife's Miata, works perfect. I guess if you have an M3 you are expected to spend money foolishly.... :jk::boxer:

I got the "Short"...(1.5") and mounted it up under the bumper....

Yes, I could have gone to the hardware store and bought some brackets and some small screws, but this set has the sticky tape which lets you set the brackets in place, then drill the holes...The set even comes with the correct size drill bit. No guessing....Just center and install.

That said, after trying to save my front bumper from two holes, I scraped the hell out of the lower bumper this morning on the concrete base of a light pole. Looks like I'm going to be searching "scratches" next...

Ouch.

I don't know about Virginia, but Texas requires front license plates too and they never enforce it. I got my vehicle inspected recently and had no issues.

I've had a warning issued by a State Trooper for no front plate.

I know people have gotten tickets, and just temporarily attach them for their day in court etc.

I was actually pretty upset with the way and where the dealership put their front frame on mine. So when I took of their frames and threw them away, I had to put the plate back in the same spot. There was a nasty ring around it from all the grime and dirt that had piled up behind the frame etc....ugh I hate front plates. I want to get rid of mine so bad, but now that the holes are there that looks evern worse :(

as for the question on size, I would assume the one for the Tacoma would fit.

You could always putty the holes and plastidip the center piece of the bumper. I've got the front plate on mine now.

I'm not huge on front plates and am thankful florida doesn't require one. I would not put it on unless you get harassed. Usually they wont stop you for not having a front plate, unless you're doing something else wrong. Even if they do it's a fix it ticket.

they do in TX....if you get a cop who's got a rod up his behind. When I was pulled it was the only thing. He could pull me for. I had just pulled out of a parking lot, came to a complete stop at a stop sign, turned and then he pulled in behind me. At the light I got in the turn lane, signal on, and waited. Then the light turned and I went and he came and then his lights came on...I pulled into a parking lot, out of traffic, and the only thing he had was no plate.

Wow sorry to hear about your encounter. On my last forum there were a number of people that had a motorized hide away plate. (Ill include the youtube video at the end.) The only issue I could see is mounting this on the 4runner. It was perfect for my last car since it was pretty low and didn't have skid plates but Im sure someone could figure out how to incorporate it.

If a state dmv issues you a front plate, and you can possibly get ticketed for not displaying one on your vehicle, doesn't that mean it is actually required?

If your state requires one and issues you one then yes. If people don't want to put it on and risk a citation its up to them. Another great example is window tint on your front two windows. The state requires a certain limit, but there are still people who make them darker then what they are suppose to be.
